How to Switch from iPhone to Android

Move your contacts, photos, messages, and apps from iPhone to a new Android phone — without losing anything.

    1

    Back up your iPhone

    ~15s
Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud BackupBack Up Now. Also download Google Photos on iPhone and back up all photos.
    2

    Turn off iMessage and FaceTime

    ~15s
This is critical. SettingsMessages → toggle off iMessage. SettingsFaceTime → toggle off. Without this step, you will miss text messages.
    3

Use the transfer tool during setup

    ~15s
During Android setup, use "Switch to Android" or Samsung Smart Switch to transfer contacts, photos, calendar, and more from your iPhone.
    4

    Download your apps

    ~15s
Open Google Play Store and download the Android versions of your apps. Sign in to each with your existing accounts.
    5

    Verify everything transferred

    ~15s
Check that contacts, photos, and calendar events are on your new phone. If anything is missing, it may still be in your iCloud backup.

Switching from iPhone to Android is a bigger change than upgrading within the same platform, but modern transfer tools make it much smoother than it used to be. Here is what transfers and what you need to handle manually.

What transfers automatically: contacts, photos and videos, calendar events, and free apps that exist on both platforms. What requires manual work: paid apps (you may need to re-purchase), iMessage threads (important to deregister — see below), app-specific data (game progress, etc.), and Apple-exclusive features (FaceTime, iMessage, AirDrop).

Before switching, make sure everything is backed up. Go to iPhone Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Also make sure your photos are backed up — download Google Photos on your iPhone and let it upload your full photo library before switching.

The most critical step: turn off iMessage before switching. If you do not do this, text messages from iPhone users will continue going to iMessage (which your Android phone cannot receive) instead of SMS. Go to Settings → Messages → toggle off iMessage. Also go to Settings → FaceTime → toggle it off.

During Android setup, use Google's "Switch to Android" tool or Samsung's "Smart Switch" app. These tools transfer contacts, photos, videos, calendar events, and more from your iPhone. Follow the on-screen instructions — the process usually takes 15-30 minutes depending on how much data you have.

After switching, download the Android versions of your apps from the Google Play Store and sign in to each one. Set up your email, bank apps, and messaging apps on the new phone.
