Booking a hotel room used to mean calling the hotel directly or going through a travel agent. Today, websites and apps like Hotels.com, Booking.com, and Expedia let you compare dozens of hotels in one place, read guest reviews, and often find lower prices than booking directly with the hotel.
These sites are called Online Travel Agencies, or OTAs. They collect room availability and pricing from hotels across the country (and the world) so you can see all your options in one search.
Before booking, it helps to know a few things. First, always read recent guest reviews — not just the overall star rating, but the actual written reviews. Look for consistent complaints (like noise, cleanliness, or unhelpful staff) rather than one or two bad experiences. Second, understand the cancellation policy before you confirm. Some rates are cheaper because they are non-refundable, meaning if your plans change, you lose the money. A flexible rate lets you cancel without penalty, usually up to 24 to 48 hours before check-in.
Hotels.com has a "Rewards" program where you earn one free night for every ten nights you book through the site. Booking.com shows your loyalty tier and offers "Genius" discounts once you have booked a certain number of stays.
It is also worth checking the hotel's own website after you find a rate on a booking site. Some hotels offer a "Best Rate Guarantee" where they will match or beat any price you found elsewhere if you book directly. Booking direct also sometimes gives you easier access to the front desk if issues come up.
