    1

Download Headspace and create an account

    ~15s
Search "Headspace" in the App Store or Google Play. Install the app and create a free account with your email address. You'll be asked a few questions about your goals (stress, sleep, focus, etc.) so Headspace can suggest where to start.
    2

    Complete the Basics course

    ~23s
From the home screen, find and start the Basics course. Work through the sessions in order — each one builds on the last. Start with 3–5 minutes per session. You can do one session per day or more if you'd like.

    Quick Tip

It's normal for your mind to wander during meditation. That's not failure — noticing that your mind has wandered and gently bringing attention back is the actual practice.

    3

    Track your daily minutes

    ~15s
After each session, Headspace adds your minutes to your Stats page. You can see your streak (consecutive days), total meditation minutes, and how your sessions compare to previous weeks. This gives a sense of progress even when meditation feels hard.
    4

Use Sleepcasts and sleep sounds at bedtime

    ~15s
Tap Sleep from the bottom navigation. Sleepcasts combine gentle narration with ambient sound — they're designed to be listened to while you're in bed getting ready to sleep. Alternatively, try one of the sleep sounds if you prefer less narration.
    5

Try a Mini meditation when time is short

    ~22s
Headspace includes 1-minute and 3-minute Mini meditations for when you only have a moment. Look in the Today tab or search "mini." These are perfect for a stressful moment at work or a break between tasks.

    Quick Tip

If your employer provides benefits through a health plan, check whether Headspace is included before paying out of pocket — many workplace wellness programs cover it.

Headspace is a meditation and mindfulness app designed to teach you how to meditate through structured courses. Unlike some apps that give you a large library to browse, Headspace walks you through meditation systematically, starting from the very beginning. This makes it particularly well-suited for people who have never meditated before and want a clear path to follow.

The cornerstone of Headspace is the Basics course — a series of 10 sessions ranging from 3 to 10 minutes each. These sessions explain what meditation actually is, how the mind works, why thoughts wander, and how to gently bring your attention back. The guided voice is calm and clear, with clear analogies that make concepts approachable without any prior knowledge.

Headspace tracks your daily meditation minutes and shows a streak counter — a running total of consecutive days you've meditated. Some people find this motivating. If you miss a day, your streak resets, but the important thing is returning to the practice, not maintaining a perfect record.

Beyond the Basics course, Headspace offers Sleepcasts — ambient audio experiences with gentle narration that help you wind down — as well as sleep sounds, focus music for working or studying, and SOS sessions for moments of sudden stress or anxiety.

The Focus Music section is useful during tasks that require concentration. The tracks are designed to help you stay present without being distracting.

Headspace for Work is a corporate offering, so if your employer offers mental health benefits, check whether Headspace is included — you may be able to access it for free.

Headspace's subscription costs around $70 per year. Student and family discounts may be available. A free trial period lets you try the core content before paying. If cost is a concern, Insight Timer offers thousands of free guided meditations from teachers around the world, and the UCLA Mindful app is entirely free.

Meditation has been studied for decades. Regular practice is associated with reduced stress, improved focus, and better sleep in many people. It's not a substitute for professional mental health care — if you're dealing with significant anxiety or depression, speak with a doctor or therapist — but it can be a valuable daily habit alongside other healthy practices.
