    1

    Download the Electrify America App

    ~20s
Search "Electrify America" in the App Store or Google Play and install the app. Open it and create a free account using your email address. Creating an account is optional for one-time tap-to-pay sessions, but having an account lets you track your charging history, save payment methods, and set up a monthly pass that reduces your per-minute charging cost.
    2

Find a Charging Station Near You

    ~28s
In the app, tap the map icon to see all Electrify America stations near your current location or along your planned route. Each station pin shows how many chargers are available right now versus how many are in use. Tap a station to see its address, hours, number of chargers, plug types, and current wait time if any.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Check station availability before you leave — seeing 0 chargers available at your planned stop lets you adjust your route rather than arriving and waiting.

    3

Check That Your Car Is Compatible

    ~24s
Confirm your vehicle's plug type before you arrive. Most 2020 and newer electric vehicles from Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW use CCS — these will work at any Electrify America station. If you drive a Tesla, you need the CCS adapter available from Tesla's website. If you are unsure about your car's plug type, check your owner's manual or search your car's model name and "charge port type."
    4

    Start a Charging Session

    ~21s
Pull into an available charging spot and plug the charging cable into your car's charge port. Open the Electrify America app, tap "Start session," and select the charger number displayed on the machine. The charger will unlock and begin delivering power. Alternatively, tap your credit or debit card directly on the contactless reader on the charger to start a session without the app.
    5

Monitor Your Session and Understand Pricing

    ~23s
During charging, the app shows your current charging speed in kilowatts, how long you have been charging, and how much the session is costing so far. Electrify America charges by the minute, and the per-minute rate varies by charger power level. A membership plan (around $4 per month) significantly lowers the per-minute rate and is worth it if you charge at Electrify America more than once a month.
    6

    End the Session and Unplug

    ~29s
You can stop the session at any time by tapping "Stop session" in the app or pressing the stop button on the charger. Once the session stops, unplug the cable from your car and return it to the charger holster. The total cost will be billed to the card on file in your app account. You will also receive an email receipt.

    Warning

Some locations charge an idle fee if you leave your car plugged in after it finishes charging. Move your car once it reaches your desired charge level.

Electrify America is one of the largest public fast-charging networks for electric vehicles in the United States. It was built as part of Volkswagen's commitment following an emissions settlement and now has over 900 charging locations across the country, with multiple fast chargers at each location. You will find Electrify America stations at Walmart parking lots, rest stops, and shopping centers — often places where you would stop anyway during a long drive.

What makes Electrify America stations fast is their charging power. These are DC fast chargers (direct current), which can add significant range in a short amount of time — often 100 to 150 miles of range in about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your car. This is much faster than the Level 2 chargers you might use at home or at a destination.

Before you go, it helps to know what plug type your car uses. Most modern electric vehicles in the US now use CCS (Combined Charging System), which is the standard plug at Electrify America stations. Older Nissan LEAFs use CHAdeMO, which is also available at some Electrify America stations but is being phased out. Tesla vehicles can use Electrify America stations with an adapter (sold separately by Tesla).

You can pay at Electrify America stations in two ways: through the app linked to an account, or by tapping a credit card directly at the charger. No app is required to use the network.
