How to Use Windows Search to Find Files and Programs Fast

Windows has a powerful built-in search that can find any file, app, email, or setting on your computer in seconds. Here's how to use it like a pro.

    1

Open Search with the Windows Key

    ~20s
Press the Windows key on your keyboard (bottom row, between Ctrl and Alt, looks like a window logo). Start typing immediately. Results appear as you type — programs at the top, files below, web results at the bottom.

    Quick Tip

You can also click the magnifying glass icon in the taskbar at the bottom of your screen to open search.

    2

Open Any App with a Few Keystrokes

    ~16s
Press Windows key, type the first few letters of the app name. For example: type "chr" to find Chrome, "wor" to find Word, "calc" to find Calculator. Press Enter to open the top result, or use the arrow keys to select a different result.
    3

Search for a File by Name or Content

    ~23s
Press Windows key and type part of the file name — for example, "tax return" or "birthday photo." Windows searches Documents, Downloads, Desktop, and other folders. Click a result to open it directly.

    Quick Tip

If you remember part of what's inside a document but not the file name, Windows Search can search inside document text. Type words from the document content — it may still find the file.

    4

    Find a Settings Page Quickly

    ~15s
Press Windows key and type the setting you are looking for. For example: "Bluetooth," "display brightness," "change password," "Wi-Fi." The matching Settings page appears as a top result. Click it to go directly there without navigating through menus.
    5

    Search Within File Explorer

    ~22s
Open File Explorer (yellow folder icon on taskbar). Navigate to the folder you want to search within. Click the search box in the top right corner and type your search term. This limits the search to that folder and its subfolders.

    Quick Tip

To search your entire computer, navigate to "This PC" in File Explorer before searching — this sets the search to cover all drives and folders.

The search function built into Windows is one of the most underused tools on the computer. Instead of clicking through folders trying to remember where you saved something, you can press a key combination and type a few letters — Windows finds the file, app, or setting immediately.

This guide covers three types of Windows search: finding and opening programs, finding files and documents, and finding settings buried deep in the Windows menus.

The fastest way to open any program on your computer is to press the Windows key and start typing the name. You do not even need to click the Start button — the Windows key activates search immediately. Type "Chrome" and press Enter to open Chrome. Type "Calculator" to open the calculator. Type "Word" to open Microsoft Word. This works for every installed application.

For finding files, the same search bar works — but you can also use the search box inside File Explorer. Open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon on your taskbar) and look at the search bar in the top right. Type any keyword from the file name, and File Explorer searches your entire computer.

Windows Search also finds settings. Can't find where to change your screen brightness? Press Windows key, type "brightness," and Settings → Display brightness appears as the top result. This is faster than navigating through layers of menus.

In Windows 11, Microsoft improved search significantly — it can now search inside document contents (not just file names), and it can find web results alongside local content if you have search set to include the web.
