    1

Pin an app to the taskbar

    ~28s
To pin an app you use regularly, find it in the Start menu by clicking the Start button. Right-click the app's icon and choose "Pin to taskbar." The icon will appear at the bottom of your screen and stay there permanently. You can also pin a running app by right-clicking its icon in the taskbar and selecting "Pin to taskbar."

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: To rearrange pinned apps, click and drag their icons left or right along the taskbar to put them in the order you prefer.

    2

Move the Start button to the left

    ~21s
Many Windows 10 users find the centered Start button in Windows 11 unfamiliar. To move it back to the left side: right-click an empty spot on the taskbar and choose "Taskbar settings." In the settings page, look for "Taskbar behaviors" and change "Taskbar alignment" from "Center" to "Left." The Start button and app icons will shift to the left immediately.
    3

    Hide or customize Widgets

    ~22s
To turn off the Widgets button on the taskbar, right-click an empty spot on the taskbar and select "Taskbar settings." Under the "Taskbar items" section, toggle "Widgets" to Off. If you do want to use Widgets, click the weather icon or press Windows key + W to open the panel. You can add, remove, or resize the cards inside Widgets by clicking the three-dot menu on each card.
    4

Unpin apps you no longer need

    ~17s
If your taskbar gets crowded with apps you rarely open, right-click any pinned app icon and choose "Unpin from taskbar." The icon disappears from the taskbar but the program is still installed on your computer — you can find it in the Start menu whenever you need it.
    5

Check the notification area and system tray

    ~28s
The far right side of the taskbar shows the clock, date, and small icons for programs running in the background (like your antivirus, Wi-Fi, and volume). Click the small upward arrow near these icons to see all background programs. Right-click any icon you do not recognize to get options for managing or closing that program.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Click the date and time in the bottom-right corner to open a combined calendar and notification panel — useful for quickly checking appointments or clearing notifications.

The taskbar is the bar that runs across the bottom of your Windows screen. It shows your Start button, pinned apps you use often, a search bar, and a notification area on the right side. In Windows 11, Microsoft made some changes to how the taskbar works compared to Windows 10 — the Start button moved to the center, and new features like Widgets were added.

Pinning apps to the taskbar means putting a shortcut icon there so you can open that program with one click, without having to search for it or navigate through menus. You can pin as many apps as you like, though adding too many makes it harder to find what you need quickly.

Widgets is a feature that shows you a panel of news headlines, weather, sports scores, and other information at a glance. You open it by clicking the small weather icon on the left side of the taskbar, or by pressing the Windows key and the letter W at the same time. Some people find Widgets useful for checking the weather quickly; others prefer to turn it off to keep the taskbar less cluttered.

The Windows 11 taskbar has some limitations compared to Windows 10 — for example, you cannot move it to the side or top of the screen in the standard settings. However, most core features work well and become second nature with a little practice.

Personalizing the taskbar takes only a few minutes and makes your daily computer use much more efficient. The apps you use most often — your email, web browser, word processor — should be one click away.
