How to Customize the Windows 11 Start Menu

Windows 11 moved the Start Menu to the center and changed how it works. Here's how to pin your favorite apps, reorganize it, and make it feel familiar.

    1

Open the Start Menu and Explore It

    ~17s
Click the Windows icon at the center of the taskbar (or press the Windows key). The Start Menu opens showing Pinned apps at the top and Recommended content at the bottom. Click "All apps" in the top-right corner to see every installed app in alphabetical order.
    2

    Pin Your Favorite Apps

    ~21s
Click "All apps" to see all your installed apps. Find an app you want to pin — for example, Google Chrome or your email app. Right-click on the app name and select "Pin to Start." The app appears in the Pinned section at the top of your Start Menu for quick access.

    Quick Tip

To rearrange pinned apps, drag and drop them within the Pinned section.

    3

Remove Apps You Do Not Want Pinned

    ~16s
In the Pinned section of the Start Menu, right-click any app you want to remove. Click "Unpin from Start." The app is not deleted — it is still installed and available in "All apps." It just no longer shows on the first Start Menu screen.
    4

Move the Start Button to the Left Corner

    ~15s
Right-click on an empty area of the taskbar and select "Taskbar settings." Scroll down to "Taskbar behaviors." Find "Taskbar alignment" and change the dropdown from "Center" to "Left." The Start button and all taskbar icons immediately shift to the left corner.
    5

    Turn Off Recommended Files (Optional)

    ~17s
Open Settings (Windows key + I) → PersonalizationStart. Toggle off "Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer." This hides the Recommended section and shows more space for Pinned apps.

    Quick Tip

Also toggle off "Show recently added apps" if you prefer a cleaner Start Menu.

Windows 11 moved the Start Menu from the bottom-left corner to the center of the taskbar, and the menu itself looks quite different from Windows 10. Instead of showing all your apps at once, Windows 11's Start Menu shows "Pinned" apps at the top and "Recommended" recent files at the bottom.

Many people find the new Start Menu confusing at first, but it is actually more customizable than Windows 10's version once you know where to look. You can pin your most-used apps to the top section, move the Start button back to the left corner, resize the pinned area, and remove the Recommended section if you find it cluttered.

Pinning apps to the Start Menu is the most important customization. When you pin an app, it shows up on the first screen of the Start Menu — no searching needed. Aim to pin the 6–8 apps you use every day: your email, web browser, news site, weather app, etc.

The Recommended section shows your most recently opened files and newly installed apps. This can be helpful for quickly reopening a document you were working on, but some people prefer more privacy and would rather not see recent files. You can turn off Recommended files entirely in Settings.

You can also move the entire taskbar (including the Start button) back to the left corner — the way it looked in Windows 7 and 10 — by changing one setting in the Taskbar Alignment option. Many people switching from older versions of Windows find this reassuring.
