Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone

    ~30s
Go to Settings, then tap Phone, then tap Wi-Fi Calling. Toggle the switch to turn Wi-Fi Calling on. You may see a prompt to enter or confirm your address — this is for emergency services so 911 can find your location when you call over Wi-Fi. Enter your home address and tap Save.

    Quick Tip

If you do not see Wi-Fi Calling in your Phone settings, your carrier may not support it on your current plan, or the feature might need to be enabled on your account. Call your carrier to confirm.

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on Android

    ~18s
Go to Settings and tap Network & Internet or Connections (depending on your phone). Tap on your carrier's name or tap Mobile Network. Look for Wi-Fi Calling and toggle it on. On Samsung phones, go to Settings, then Connections, then Wi-Fi Calling. The exact location varies slightly by phone model.
    3

    Confirm it is working

    ~17s
After turning on Wi-Fi Calling, look at the top of your phone screen where you see your signal bars. When Wi-Fi Calling is active, you should see a small Wi-Fi icon or the words "Wi-Fi" next to your carrier name. Try making a test call to confirm everything is working properly.
    4

Make calls exactly as you normally would

    ~29s
Once Wi-Fi Calling is set up, you do not need to do anything differently. Open the Phone app and dial as usual. Your phone chooses Wi-Fi or cellular automatically based on which signal is stronger. You do not need to think about which one you are using — it all happens in the background.

    Quick Tip

If a call drops or sounds unclear, try moving closer to your Wi-Fi router. Wi-Fi call quality depends on your internet connection speed. Most home internet connections are fast enough for excellent call quality.

If you have ever noticed that your cell signal is weak inside your home — one bar or no signal at all — you might have struggled to make or receive phone calls. This is a common problem, especially in homes with thick walls, in rural areas, or in basements. Wi-Fi Calling is a feature built into most modern smartphones that solves this problem by routing your phone calls through your home internet connection instead of the cell towers.

When Wi-Fi Calling is turned on, your phone automatically uses your Wi-Fi connection to make and receive calls whenever your cell signal is weak. You dial and answer calls exactly the same way you always do — nothing changes about how you use the phone. The only difference is that your calls travel over your internet connection in the background. If you move out of Wi-Fi range, the call smoothly switches back to the cell network without dropping.

Wi-Fi Calling is supported by all four major carriers in the United States — Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and US Cellular — as well as most smaller carriers. It is available on iPhone and nearly all modern Android phones. The feature is typically free with no extra charge on your bill — you are using your existing home internet, and the calls count toward your regular plan's minutes (or are unlimited if your plan includes unlimited talk).

One important benefit of Wi-Fi Calling is that it also works when you are traveling internationally. If you are in another country and have access to Wi-Fi at a hotel or a family member's home, you can call US numbers without paying international roaming rates — the call uses Wi-Fi and is treated as a regular domestic call. This can save you significant money compared to international calling plans.

Setting up Wi-Fi Calling takes less than two minutes. You turn it on once in your phone's settings, and from that point forward it works automatically in the background whenever you need it.
