Wi-Fi calling is a feature available on most modern smartphones that routes your calls and text messages through your home Wi-Fi internet connection instead of the cellular network. This is extremely useful if you live in an area with weak cell signal, a basement apartment, or a building with thick walls that block cell coverage.
When Wi-Fi calling is enabled, your phone automatically switches to Wi-Fi for calls when the cell signal is poor and switches back to cellular when the signal improves. You do not need to do anything manually — it happens in the background. The call quality is often better than a weak cellular call, and calls use your regular cellular minutes (you are not making an internet call like Skype or FaceTime).
Wi-Fi calling is supported by all major carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) and most smaller carriers. It is available on iPhones (model 5c and newer) and most Android phones from the last several years. Your carrier may need to have this feature enabled on your account before it works on your phone.
