Why Is My Phone Battery Dying So Fast? 5 Ways to Fix It

Apps running in the background drain your battery silently. These five free fixes work on both iPhone and Android.

    1

See which apps are draining your battery most

    ~31s
On iPhone, go to SettingsBattery. Scroll down to see a list of apps with percentages showing how much battery each one used in the last 24 hours or last 10 days. On Android, go to SettingsBatteryBattery Usage. Look for apps near the top of the list that you rarely use — those are the ones to fix first.

    Quick Tip

If Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok appear near the top, try switching to the browser version of those sites instead of the app — browser versions use much less battery.

    2

    Turn off Background App Refresh

    ~33s
On iPhone, go to SettingsGeneralBackground App Refresh. Tap "Background App Refresh" again at the top and select "Off." This stops apps from downloading new content when you are not looking at them. On Android, the setting is called "Background data" — go to SettingsApps, tap an app, then tap "Mobile data" and turn off "Background data."

    Quick Tip

You can turn Background App Refresh off for all apps at once on iPhone, or go app by app and only leave it on for apps you genuinely need fresh — like a news app you check every morning.

    3

Lower screen brightness and shorten screen timeout

    ~26s
Your screen is the single biggest battery drain on any phone. On iPhone, swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center, then drag the brightness slider down to around 50%. On Android, swipe down from the top of the screen to find the brightness bar. For screen timeout (how long before your screen turns off on its own), go to SettingsDisplayScreen Timeout and set it to 30 seconds or 1 minute.
    4

Turn off location services for apps that do not need them

    ~31s
On iPhone, go to SettingsPrivacy & SecurityLocation Services. Tap each app and choose "Never" or "While Using the App" — not "Always." Apps like games, recipe apps, and shopping apps have no reason to know where you are. On Android, go to SettingsLocationApp Permissions and switch apps from "Allow all the time" to "Only while using the app."

    Quick Tip

Weather apps only need your location "While Using" — they do not need it "Always." The same goes for most apps that request location.

    5

Restart your phone once a week

    ~27s
A complete restart clears small processes that build up over time and quietly drain battery. On iPhone, press and hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds, then press the side button to turn it back on. On Android, press and hold the power button and tap Restart.

    Quick Tip

The Apple Support page for iPhone battery optimization is at support.apple.com/en-us/111840. For Android, Google's guide is at support.google.com — search "Android battery life tips."

A phone that loses charge quickly is one of the most common complaints people have — and it is almost always fixable without buying a new phone. The biggest culprits are apps running in the background when you are not using them, a screen that stays on too long or is too bright, and location services running all the time.

After Apple released iOS 18 and Google released Android 15, many users noticed faster battery drain. This often happens because apps re-sync their data after a major update. Making the five adjustments below usually brings battery life back to normal within a couple of days.

Your phone battery also gradually loses capacity as it ages. iPhones show you exactly how much original capacity is left: go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health and Charging. If it shows below 80%, replacing the battery at an Apple Store or authorized repair shop costs around $89 — much less than a new phone.
