Most laptops come with a built-in webcam that captures 720p video with limited low-light performance. In a well-lit room, it gets the job done. But if you take a lot of video calls, spend time working from home, or regularly appear on Zoom or Teams, an external webcam is one of the most affordable upgrades that visibly improves your appearance to others.
The difference comes down to image sensor quality, lens design, and how the camera handles low-light situations. A $60 external webcam handles dim rooms far better than a built-in laptop camera, and the image tends to be sharper and more natural looking.
Here are the most popular options at different price points. At the budget end, the Logitech C270 (around $30) and C310 (around $40) are reliable choices for basic video calling — better than most built-in cameras and widely compatible. They connect via USB and work immediately without installing any software.
For a mid-range upgrade, the Logitech C920 (around $80–100) is one of the most recommended webcams available. It shoots 1080p video, handles low light reasonably well, and has a built-in microphone that's decent for calls. The Logitech Brio 300 is a newer model in a similar range with a compact design.
If you want the best image quality available for a home webcam, the Logitech Brio 4K (around $150–200) shoots true 4K video and has outstanding autofocus and light correction. The Elgato Facecam Pro is another high-end option popular with people who record videos for YouTube or streaming.
Setting up any of these is the same: plug the USB cable into your computer. On Zoom, go to Settings > Video > Camera and select the new webcam from the dropdown. On Teams, go to Settings > Devices > Camera. The webcam takes over immediately.
If you own an iPhone (model 11 or newer) running iOS 16 or later, and you have a Mac, you may not need to buy a webcam at all. Apple's Continuity Camera feature uses your iPhone as a webcam wirelessly. The iPhone camera is significantly better than any standalone webcam in the same price range.
