Vanguard is one of the largest investment companies in the world, managing millions of Americans' retirement accounts — 401(k)s, IRAs, and other investment accounts. If your employer's retirement plan is through Vanguard, or if you have a personal IRA with them, their free mobile app lets you check your account anytime.
The app shows your current account balance and how it has changed over time, your investment holdings (the funds your money is in), recent account activity, and performance charts. Most people use it primarily to check their balance and see how their investments are performing.
Reading a retirement account balance can be confusing at first because the numbers are large and change daily with the stock market. A $237,500 balance today might show $234,000 tomorrow if the market dropped — that's normal and doesn't mean anything went wrong. Retirement accounts are long-term investments designed to grow over decades, not to be stable like a savings account.
The app also allows some account management: you can view and update beneficiaries, view statements and tax documents (including your 1099-R for distributions and 5498 for IRA contributions), change your contribution percentage if your employer allows it, and update contact information.
For active management — changing what funds your money is in, initiating withdrawals, or setting up new contributions — you typically have more options through the full Vanguard website on a computer. But for day-to-day account monitoring, the app is convenient and sufficient.
Vanguard's app is separate from your employer's 401(k) portal if your employer uses a different record-keeper. Some employers use Vanguard as record-keeper; others use Fidelity, Empower, or another company. Make sure you know which company holds your specific account.
