How to Use WhatsApp for Free Calls and Messages

Send free texts and make free video or voice calls to anyone in the world using WhatsApp on your phone.

    1

    Download and install WhatsApp

    ~15s
Search for "WhatsApp" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and download the free app. Open it and tap "Agree and Continue."
    2

    Verify your phone number

    ~15s
Enter your country code and phone number. WhatsApp will send a 6-digit verification code by text message. Enter the code to verify your account. WhatsApp uses your phone number as your identity — there is no separate username or password needed.
    3

    Set up your profile

    ~15s
Enter your name and optionally add a profile photo. Tap the checkmark when done. WhatsApp will automatically show you which of your existing phone contacts also use WhatsApp.
    4

Send a message or make a call

    ~19s
Tap the chat bubble icon at the bottom (or top right on Android). Tap a contact name to open a conversation and type a message. To make a call, open a conversation and tap the phone icon for a voice call or the video camera icon for a video call. Both are free.
    5

    Create a group chat

    ~15s
To chat with multiple people at once — great for family groups — tap the new chat icon, then "New Group." Select the contacts to add, then give the group a name and photo. You can have up to 1,024 people in a WhatsApp group.
