    How to File Taxes with TurboTax Online

    Create a TurboTax account

    Go to turbotax.intuit.com and click "Start for free." Enter an email and create a password. Pick the version that matches your situation — Free Edition for a single W-2, Deluxe for itemized deductions, Premier for investments.

    Import your W-2

    When it asks for your W-2, enter your employer's EIN (on the W-2) and TurboTax can pull the numbers directly. You can also take a photo of the W-2 with the TurboTax app and it will read the numbers for you.

    Answer the interview questions

    TurboTax asks about kids, student loan interest, medical bills, charity donations, and dozens of other things. Say yes or no — it will only show you the details for items that apply.

    Review your refund or amount owed

    At the top of the screen, a number shows your refund (in green) or the amount you owe (in red). Review the summary page for any flags or missed deductions before filing.

    E-file with the IRS

    ~15s
    Click "File" and choose direct deposit for your refund (it arrives in 1 to 3 weeks). Pay any TurboTax fees with a card, and e-sign your return using last year's refund amount or your AGI. Print a copy of the final PDF for your records.
