How to Use Microsoft Word Online for Free

Write, edit, and share documents using the free web version of Microsoft Word — no software to install.

    1

    Create a free Microsoft account

    ~15s
Go to account.microsoft.com and click "Create a Microsoft account." Enter your email address (or create a new Outlook address) and follow the prompts to set a password and verify your identity.
    2

    Go to Word Online

    ~15s
Go to office.com and sign in with your Microsoft account. You will see a list of free Office apps. Click on "Word" to open the online version.
    3

    Create or open a document

    ~15s
Click "New blank document" to start writing, or click "Upload" to open a document from your computer. Your document will save automatically to OneDrive as you type.
    4

    Use the formatting toolbar

    ~15s
The toolbar at the top lets you change font, size, bold, italic, and paragraph alignment — the same controls as the desktop version. Click any text and then use the toolbar to format it.
    5

    Share or download your document

    ~15s
Click "Share" in the top right corner to send the document to someone else by email or link. Click "File" then "Save As" then "Download a Copy" to save a .docx file to your computer.
