Download Lyft and create an account

Search for "Lyft" in the App Store or Google Play Store. Install the free app and open it. Tap "Get Started" and enter your phone number — Lyft will text you a verification code to confirm it's you.

Add your payment method

After verifying your phone number, enter your name and add a payment method under "Payment" in the app menu. Lyft accepts most credit and debit cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Request a ride

Tap "Enter destination" on the main screen and type your destination address. Lyft will show available ride types and estimated prices. The standard option is "Lyft" — tap it to see the fare estimate, then tap "Confirm Lyft."

Meet your driver

The app shows your driver's name, photo, car make and model, and license plate. Your driver's ETA appears on screen. Walk to your pickup spot — shown as a pin on the map — and wait there.

Ride safely and rate afterward

Before getting in, confirm the driver's name and license plate match the app. After the ride, Lyft asks you to rate the driver. You can also add a tip from the app if you want — it goes entirely to the driver.
