How to Use Lyft — A Complete Beginner's Guide

Book a Lyft ride, find your driver, and get where you're going safely — a full walkthrough for people using Lyft for the first time.

    1

Download Lyft and create an account

    ~15s
Search for "Lyft" in the App Store or Google Play Store. Install the free app and open it. Tap "Get Started" and enter your phone number — Lyft will text you a verification code to confirm it's you.
    2

    Add your payment method

    ~15s
After verifying your phone number, enter your name and add a payment method under "Payment" in the app menu. Lyft accepts most credit and debit cards as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
    3

    Request a ride

    ~15s
Tap "Enter destination" on the main screen and type your destination address. Lyft will show available ride types and estimated prices. The standard option is "Lyft" — tap it to see the fare estimate, then tap "Confirm Lyft."
    4

    Meet your driver

    ~15s
The app shows your driver's name, photo, car make and model, and license plate. Your driver's ETA appears on screen. Walk to your pickup spot — shown as a pin on the map — and wait there.
    5

    Ride safely and rate afterward

    ~15s
Before getting in, confirm the driver's name and license plate match the app. After the ride, Lyft asks you to rate the driver. You can also add a tip from the app if you want — it goes entirely to the driver.

Lyft is a rideshare service that works very similarly to Uber. You request a ride through the Lyft app, a nearby driver comes to pick you up, and your payment is handled automatically through the app. Lyft is available in most US cities and many smaller communities, and the app is free to download on iPhone and Android.

One feature Lyft offers that is especially helpful for older adults is Lyft Assisted — a ride option where drivers are trained to offer extra help, such as assisting passengers in and out of the car or helping with bags. You can select Lyft Assisted when booking if that option is available in your area.

To get started, you will need the free Lyft app, an account with your name and phone number, and a payment method. Lyft accepts credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid debit cards. Fares are shown before you confirm, so there are no surprises.
