    1

Connect the flash drive to your Mac

    ~24s
Plug the flash drive into one of the USB-A or USB-C ports on your Mac. If your flash drive has a USB-A (rectangular) connector and your Mac only has USB-C ports, use a USB-C to USB-A adapter. The drive should appear on your desktop as an icon.

    Quick Tip

If you don't see it on the desktop, open Finder and look in the left sidebar under "Locations" — it will be listed there.

    2

    Open the flash drive

    ~15s
Double-click the flash drive icon on your desktop (or click it in the Finder sidebar). A window opens showing whatever files are already stored on it. If it's new, it will be empty.
    3

Copy files to the flash drive

    ~20s
To save a file from your Mac to the flash drive, click and drag the file from wherever it lives (Desktop, Documents, etc.) into the open flash drive window. Hold the Option key while dragging if you want to keep a copy on your Mac rather than moving the file. The file will copy to the drive.
    4

Copy files from the flash drive to your Mac

    ~15s
Open the flash drive window in Finder. Drag the files you want out of that window and into a folder on your Mac — like your Desktop or Documents folder. Your Mac will copy them over.
    5

    Safely eject the flash drive

    ~22s
Before unplugging, right-click (or Control-click) the flash drive icon on your desktop and choose "Eject." Or drag the icon to the Trash (the Trash icon turns into an eject symbol). Wait until the drive icon disappears from your desktop before physically removing it.

    Warning

Never yank out a flash drive while files are copying or without ejecting first. Doing so can corrupt the data on the drive.

A USB flash drive (also called a thumb drive or memory stick) is a small portable storage device that lets you carry files with you or back them up away from your main computer. On a Mac, connecting a flash drive is quick — the drive appears right on your desktop so you can work with it like any folder.

Newer Macs (made after 2016) typically use USB-C ports instead of the older, larger USB-A ports. If your flash drive has the rectangular USB-A connector and your Mac only has USB-C ports, you'll need a small USB-C to USB-A adapter, available for a few dollars at any electronics or office supply store.

Once connected, the flash drive icon shows up on your Mac desktop and in the Finder sidebar. You can drag files onto it to save copies there, or drag files off it to move them to your Mac.

Common uses for flash drives on a Mac: - Backing up important files like photos, documents, and financial records - Moving files between a Mac and a Windows PC - Giving someone a file that's too large to email - Saving a copy of work before making major changes

Flash drives are reusable, durable, and inexpensive. A 32GB drive holds roughly 10,000 photos or several thousand documents. Storing a spare copy of your tax returns or medical records on a flash drive kept somewhere safe is a smart habit.
