Tracking your blood pressure at home gives you and your doctor a much more complete picture of your cardiovascular health than occasional office readings. Many blood pressure monitors now connect to your phone via Bluetooth, automatically logging each reading so you can see trends over time.
Popular Bluetooth-connected blood pressure monitors include Omron (connects to the Omron Connect app), Withings BPM (connects to the Withings Health Mate app), and QardioArm (connects to the Qardio app). These monitors cost $50-100 and are available at pharmacies and online retailers.
To set up: take the monitor out of the box and install batteries or charge it. Download the monitor's companion app (Omron Connect, Withings Health Mate, or Qardio) on your phone. Create an account and follow the in-app instructions to pair the monitor via Bluetooth.
To take a reading: sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Rest for 5 minutes before measuring. Place the cuff on your upper arm (follow the instructions that came with the monitor for proper placement). Press start. The monitor inflates, takes your reading, and automatically sends it to the app.
The app stores every reading with the date and time. Over weeks and months, you build a clear picture of your blood pressure trends. Most apps display charts and averages. You can share these with your doctor at your next appointment.
Normal blood pressure is below 120/80. Talk to your doctor about your target if you are on medication. The American Heart Association recommends measuring at the same time each day for consistent results.
