Amazon is the largest online marketplace in the United States. You can buy almost anything — from household supplies to electronics to clothing — and have it delivered to your door, often within one to two days. Here is how to shop on Amazon safely, whether you are a first-time user or want to improve your shopping habits.

First, create an account at amazon.com or through the Amazon app (free on iPhone and Android). You will need an email address and a password. Once logged in, you can add a payment method (credit card, debit card, or Amazon gift card) and your shipping address.

To find products, use the search bar at the top. Type what you are looking for, like "wireless keyboard" or "running shoes size 10." Results show product images, titles, prices, star ratings, and number of reviews.

When evaluating a product, pay attention to the star rating and the number of reviews. A product with 4.5 stars and 10,000 reviews is more reliable than one with 5 stars and 15 reviews. Read a few of the detailed reviews — especially the 3-star reviews, which tend to be the most balanced and honest.

Check who is selling the product. Items "Sold by Amazon.com" are sold directly by Amazon. Items sold by third-party sellers (other companies using Amazon's marketplace) can still be great, but check the seller's rating. Click the seller name to see their feedback score. Stick with sellers who have 95 percent or higher positive feedback.

Look for "Fulfilled by Amazon" — this means even if a third-party seller lists the product, Amazon handles shipping and returns, giving you the same return policy and customer service as Amazon-sold items.

Before purchasing, check the return policy. Most items sold or fulfilled by Amazon can be returned within 30 days. Review the total price including tax and any shipping fees.
