    1

Download the Uber app and create your account

    ~25s
Search for "Uber" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android) and install the free app. Open it and tap "Create Account." You will enter your name, phone number, and email address. Uber will send a text message with a verification code — enter that code to confirm your phone number. Your phone number is how the driver will contact you if needed, so use the number you carry with you.
    2

    Add a payment method

    ~32s
After creating your account, Uber will prompt you to add a payment method. Tap "Payment" and choose "Add Credit or Debit Card." Enter your card number, expiration date, and the 3-digit security code on the back. You can also link a PayPal account if you prefer that. Your card is charged automatically at the end of each ride, so you never need to handle money in the car. Uber saves your payment method securely for future rides.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Many credit cards offer cashback or travel rewards on rideshare purchases — check if your card has this benefit before adding it.

    3

    Request your first ride

    ~27s
Open the Uber app. It will show a map centered on your current location with a search bar at the bottom. Tap "Where to?" and type your destination — a street address, a landmark, or a business name all work. The app will show you available ride types (UberX is the standard, affordable option) along with the price for each. Tap your chosen option and then tap "Request UberX" (or whichever type you selected). Uber immediately starts looking for a nearby driver.
    4

    Wait for your driver

    ~39s
After requesting, a screen appears showing your driver's name, photo, car make and model, and license plate number — along with a live map showing the driver's car moving toward you. The estimated arrival time is displayed at the top. When the driver is one minute away, you will get a notification. Go outside and look for the car matching the license plate shown in the app. The driver may also call or text you if they have trouble finding you.

    Warning

Always confirm the license plate and the driver's name before getting into the car. Ask "What's the name on your pickup?" — a real Uber driver will say your name, not theirs. Never get into a car where the driver asks your name first.

    5

    During the ride and paying

    ~23s
Sit back and enjoy the ride — Uber's built-in GPS navigation guides the driver to your destination. You can follow along on the map in the app if you like. When you arrive, the driver will stop and you simply get out — the fare is automatically charged to your saved payment method within a few minutes. You will receive an email receipt showing the route, time, and amount charged.
    6

Rate your driver and leave a tip

    ~37s
After each ride, the app asks you to rate your driver from 1 to 5 stars. Be honest — driver ratings affect their standing on the platform. You can also leave a cash tip within the app, which goes directly to the driver. If anything went wrong — wrong route, rude behavior, lost item — tap "Help" in the app under your trip history and Uber's support team will respond, typically within a few hours.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you forget something in an Uber, go to the app, find your completed trip, and tap "I lost an item." Uber will connect you directly with your driver by phone so you can arrange to retrieve it.

Uber is a service that connects you with nearby drivers who use their own cars to give rides, similar to calling a taxi — but you do everything through a smartphone app instead of a phone call. You tap a few buttons, a driver comes to your exact location, and you are dropped off at your destination. The fare is charged automatically to your credit card or PayPal account, so there is no need to carry cash or fumble with payment at the end of the ride.

One of the most helpful things about Uber is that you see the price before you confirm the ride. Unlike a taxi where the meter runs and you find out the cost at the end, Uber shows you an upfront fare estimate based on your pickup and destination. You can choose whether to accept that price or cancel at no charge.

Uber is available in hundreds of cities across the United States and works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is especially useful when you do not have a car available, when parking is difficult, when you have had a drink and should not drive, or when you simply prefer not to drive somewhere unfamiliar.

This guide is written for someone who has never used Uber before. It covers creating your account, adding a payment method, requesting a ride, what to expect while you wait and during the ride, and what to do if something goes wrong.
