How to Use X (Formerly Twitter) for News and Conversations

X (formerly Twitter) is where news breaks first and where people debate everything — here's how to navigate it as a new user.

    1

    Create your account

    ~20s
Go to x.com and click Sign Up. Enter your name, email address or phone number, and birth date, then follow the steps to create a username and password. Add a profile photo and a short bio so people know who you are.

    Quick Tip

Your username (handle) appears as @yourname on X. Choose something recognizable, like your real name or a variation of it.

    2

    Follow accounts you care about

    ~15s
Use the Search function to find news organizations, local news stations, sports teams, celebrities, politicians, or topics you follow. Click Follow on any account to add their posts to your home feed. Start with 10–20 accounts you genuinely want to hear from.
    3

    Read, like, and repost

    ~16s
Your home feed shows posts from accounts you follow. Tap the heart icon to like a post, the two-arrows icon to repost it to your own followers, or the speech bubble to reply. You don't have to do any of these — reading without interacting is completely fine.
    4

    Mute or block accounts

    ~24s
If you see a post from someone you don't want to hear from, tap the three-dot icon on their post and choose Mute (they can't tell) or Block (prevents all interaction). You can mute individual accounts or specific words and phrases that you don't want to see.

    Quick Tip

Muting keywords is underrated — if you want to avoid constant posts about a particular topic, mute that word in Settings > Privacy and Safety > Muted Words.

    5

    Adjust your privacy settings

    ~16s
Go to Settings > Privacy and Safety. Consider turning on "Protect your posts" if you want only your followers to see what you post, rather than the entire public internet. Review the options for who can reply to your posts and who can tag you in photos.

X, which was called Twitter until 2023, is a platform built around short public posts called "posts" (formerly tweets). It's the place where news breaks first, where public figures communicate directly with their audiences, and where ongoing conversations about sports, politics, entertainment, and every other topic happen in real time. Many people use it purely as a news feed — following reporters, news organizations, and public figures they care about.

Creating an account is free at x.com. Choose a username (called a handle, which starts with @), set up a profile photo and brief bio, and you're ready. You don't have to post anything — many X users only read and never post.

Once you have an account, the most important thing is deciding who to follow. Follow local news stations, national news organizations, accounts related to your hobbies or interests, and a few public figures whose opinions you want to hear. Your home feed shows posts from people you follow in roughly chronological or algorithmic order.

Each post can be up to 280 characters. They can include photos, videos, links, and GIFs. To respond to someone's post, click the speech bubble icon below it. To share someone else's post with your own followers, click the repost icon (two arrows in a circle). A "Like" is the heart icon.

Hashtags (words with # in front, like #weather or #SuperBowl) group posts about the same topic. Tapping a hashtag shows all recent posts using it. The Explore tab (the magnifying glass) shows trending topics and allows you to search for any term.

Muting and blocking are important tools. Muting means you stop seeing someone's posts but they can't tell. Blocking prevents someone from seeing or interacting with your account entirely. Use these freely to make your experience more pleasant.

X Premium is a paid subscription ($8/month as of 2026) that adds features like editing posts, posting longer content, and a blue checkmark. It's not necessary for most users — the free version is fully functional for reading and basic posting.
