How to Turn Off Location Tracking on Android

Stop Google and Android apps from recording your location history to protect your privacy.

    1

    Open Settings

    ~15s
Swipe down from the top of your screen and tap the gear icon. Or find the Settings app in your app drawer.
    2

    Tap Location

    ~15s
Scroll down and tap Location. This shows all location settings for your phone.
    3

    Turn off Location Services

    ~15s
At the top, flip the Use Location switch off if you want to stop all location tracking. You can turn it on briefly when you need Maps.
    4

    Review app permissions

    ~15s
If you want location on but controlled, tap App Location Permissions. For each app, pick "Deny" or "Allow only while using the app" — avoid giving permission all the time unless the app truly needs it.
    5

    Delete your Google location history

    ~15s
Open maps.google.com/timeline in a browser, sign in with your Google account, and click "Delete all Location History". This erases the log Google has been keeping about your movements.

Android phones save a detailed record of everywhere you go, and Google keeps a long history in something called Timeline. You can shut this off entirely or pick which apps get to see where you are.

Turning off location tracking does not break your phone. You can still use Maps for directions when you need it — you just stop the always-on logging in the background.
