TikTok has a reputation as a platform for teenagers, but the reality is that people of all ages use it — and the content available is far broader than dance videos. Gardening tips, cooking tutorials, nature photography, history lessons, travel footage, medical advice from licensed professionals, humor, and news all thrive on TikTok. Many older adults discover the app reluctantly and end up genuinely enjoying it.
The app is built around short videos, typically 15 seconds to a few minutes long. When you open TikTok, you see the "For You Page" — a continuously scrolling feed of videos the app thinks you'll enjoy. This feed is driven by an algorithm that learns quickly what you like. If you watch a cooking video all the way through and like it, TikTok starts showing you more cooking content. If you swipe past videos quickly, it learns those topics aren't for you.
You can browse TikTok without creating an account by going to tiktok.com in a browser, though the experience is better in the app. Download the TikTok app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android) and create a free account using your email address or phone number.
To shape your feed, actively interact with content you like: watch videos fully, use the Like button (heart icon), and tap Follow on creators whose content you want to see more of. For content you don't want, press and hold on the video and tap "Not interested" — the algorithm adjusts immediately.
Popular content for older adults includes: cooking and recipes, gardening tutorials, home organization tips, travel destinations, history and culture, health and wellness, humor and comedy, nature and wildlife, and grandparent-grandchild relationship content.
The Discover tab (magnifying glass icon) lets you search for specific topics or creators. This is a good way to find content about your interests rather than waiting for the algorithm to surface it.
Privacy settings are worth configuring, especially if you prefer not to have your activity visible to others. Go to Profile > Menu (three lines) > Settings and Privacy > Privacy to make your account private, control who can comment on your videos, and limit who can see your followers list. You don't have to post anything at all — many TikTok users only watch.
