Threads is a text-based social media app launched by Meta in July 2023. It's directly connected to Instagram — you log in with your Instagram account, and your Instagram username and followers automatically carry over. Threads was created as Meta's answer to X (formerly Twitter), and it's grown into a popular alternative for people who want a less chaotic text-sharing experience.
Unlike Instagram, which is centered on photos and videos, Threads is built around text posts up to 500 characters long. You can add photos, videos, and links to posts, but text is the focus. The tone tends to be more conversational and lighthearted than X.
Getting started takes about two minutes if you already have Instagram. Download the Threads app from the App Store or Google Play. Open it and log in with your Instagram account. Threads will show you your Instagram followers who are already on Threads and ask if you want to follow them all — you can do this in one tap or go through the list individually.
Your Threads feed shows posts from accounts you follow, plus recommended content from accounts you don't follow (similar to the Instagram For You system). Tap the heart to like a post, the speech bubble to reply, or the two-arrows icon to repost.
Posting your first Thread: tap the pencil or compose icon, type what you want to say (up to 500 characters), optionally add a photo, and tap Post. It appears in your followers' feeds.
One notable difference from X: Threads has intentionally stayed away from politically charged content and news by default. Meta designed it to feel friendlier and less argumentative. You can still follow news organizations and public figures, but the algorithm doesn't amplify controversy the same way.
Privacy settings mirror Instagram — if your Instagram account is private, your Threads account is also private. You can manage blocking and muting the same way you do on Instagram. One thing to know: you cannot delete your Threads account independently. Deleting Threads requires deleting your Instagram account, so think before you decide to leave entirely.
