Choose and plug in your smart plug

    ~36s
Purchase a smart plug and plug it into a wall outlet. Then plug the device you want to control (like a lamp) into the smart plug. Many smart plugs have a small LED light that blinks rapidly during setup mode. If it does not blink, look for a setup button on the plug — usually a small button on the side — and press it to put it into pairing mode.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Kasa plugs (EP10 and EP25) are among the easiest to set up and have a highly rated app. Amazon Smart Plugs work directly with Alexa and require no separate app if you already have an Echo.

    2

    Download the manufacturer's app

    ~19s
Every smart plug brand has its own companion app. For Kasa plugs, download the Kasa Smart app. For Wemo plugs, download the Wemo app. For Amazon Smart Plugs, use the Alexa app. For Wyze plugs, use the Wyze app. Search for the app name in your phone's App Store or Play Store and download it for free.
    3

Create an account and add the smart plug

    ~38s
Open the app and create a free account using your email address. Once signed in, tap Add Device or the plus (+) button. The app will search for your smart plug — make sure your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the one you want the plug to use. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your Wi-Fi password and complete the pairing. The app will confirm when the plug is connected.

    Warning

Smart plugs generally only work on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks, not 5 GHz. If setup fails, try connecting your phone to the 2.4 GHz version of your Wi-Fi network first. Check your router or Wi-Fi settings app to find the 2.4 GHz network name.

    4

Name the plug and test it

    ~18s
After setup, give the plug a descriptive name like "Living Room Lamp" or "Bedroom Fan." In the app, you will see the plug listed with an On/Off toggle. Tap the toggle to turn the lamp or device on and off. You can test this from anywhere — even if you are not home.
    5

    Set a schedule (optional)

    ~21s
Most smart plug apps include a Schedule or Timer feature. Tap on your plug in the app, then look for Schedule or Timer. You can set the plug to turn on at a specific time every day (great for lamps to turn on at sunset) and turn off at another time (turn off at midnight automatically). Schedules run even when your phone is off.

A smart plug is a small device that goes between your wall outlet and whatever you want to control — a lamp, a fan, a coffee maker, a phone charger. Once plugged in, the smart plug connects to your home Wi-Fi, and you can turn it on or off from an app on your phone, from anywhere in the world.

You can also set schedules. For example: turn the lamp on at 6 PM every day, and turn it off at midnight. Or set the coffee maker to start brewing at 7 AM. Once the schedule is set, it happens automatically without any tapping.

If you have an Amazon Echo (Alexa) or a Google Nest speaker, you can also control smart plugs by voice: "Alexa, turn off the living room lamp."

Smart plugs work with any device that plugs into a standard wall outlet. They cannot control devices wired directly into the wall (like built-in ceiling lights) — for those, you would need a smart light switch instead. Smart plugs also work best with simple on/off devices. They are not designed for devices that need to be set to a specific power level, like a dimmer lamp or a device with complex settings.

Popular smart plug brands include Kasa (by TP-Link), Wemo, Amazon Smart Plug, and Wyze. All are available at stores like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Amazon for roughly $10 to $20 each.

Most smart plugs require a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network (not 5 GHz). If your router broadcasts both, make sure your phone is connected to the 2.4 GHz network during initial setup — most routers show this as a separate network name with "2.4G" or "-2G" at the end.
