    1

Download the app and set up your instrument

    ~39s
Search for "Simply Piano by JoyTunes" in the App Store or Google Play and install it. When you open the app for the first time, it will ask whether you have a keyboard to connect. If you have an electronic keyboard with a USB or MIDI output, connect it to your phone using an appropriate adapter. If you are using an acoustic piano or a keyboard sitting nearby, select the option to use your phone's microphone. Place your phone on the music stand or prop it where the microphone faces the keys.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Reduce background noise as much as possible — turn off the TV and close windows. The app's microphone detection works best in a quiet room.

    2

    Complete the placement assessment

    ~24s
Simply Piano starts with a short quiz to figure out your current skill level. Answer honestly — there is no wrong answer. If you have never touched a piano before, say so. If you played years ago and remember a little, say that too. The app places you in the right starting course based on your answers, so you are not bored reviewing things you already know or confused by things that are too advanced.
    3

    Work through your first lessons

    ~34s
Your first lessons teach you where Middle C is on the keyboard, how to position your right hand, and how to play a simple five-note scale. Each lesson shows you which keys to press using colored markers on an on-screen keyboard. Play the note, and the app tells you whether it heard it correctly. A green checkmark means you got it right. A red indicator means try again. Work through each exercise until you feel comfortable before moving to the next.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Do not rush through lessons to unlock songs faster. The foundation exercises build muscle memory that makes everything else easier later on.

    4

    Start playing your first song

    ~37s
After completing the introductory exercises, Simply Piano unlocks your first real song. You can slow any song down to 50% or 75% speed so you can learn the notes before playing at full tempo. The app highlights the upcoming notes a split second before you need to play them — follow along and press each key as it highlights. Once you can play through the song at reduced speed without many mistakes, try bumping it up to full speed.

    Warning

Practice hands separately at first. The app lets you turn off the left or right hand track so you can master each hand alone before combining them. Skipping this step leads to frustration when both hands are required.

    5

Track your progress and set a practice schedule

    ~34s
Simply Piano tracks how many days in a row you have practiced — called a streak — and shows your progress through each course on your profile. Even ten to fifteen minutes of daily practice adds up quickly. Set a recurring reminder in your phone's clock app for the same time each day so practice becomes a habit. Most beginners see real improvement within two to three weeks of consistent daily sessions.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you miss a day, do not give up. Streaks are motivating, but the actual skill is built through regular practice over weeks and months, not unbroken chains.

Simply Piano is an app that teaches you to play piano using your phone or tablet's microphone. You connect a keyboard or use any piano nearby, and the app listens to what you play. It tells you right away whether you hit the right notes, held them the right length of time, or need to try again. This kind of instant feedback is what makes it so effective compared to watching videos or reading a book.

You do not need any music experience to get started. The app begins with the absolute basics — how to sit at the keyboard, which fingers go on which keys, and how to read simple sheet music. It moves at your pace. If a lesson feels too hard, you can slow it down or repeat it as many times as you need without any penalty.

Simply Piano offers a wide range of songs across many styles, including classical pieces, pop songs, movie themes, and hymns. As you complete lessons, more songs unlock. This keeps learning fun because you are always working toward something you actually want to play.

The app works best with an acoustic piano or an electronic keyboard that has at least 25 keys. You can also use a keyboard connected to your phone or tablet via a USB adapter or Bluetooth MIDI — this gives the most accurate note detection. If you do not own any keyboard, Simply Piano can still teach you hand position and music reading, but you will need a real instrument to complete the interactive lessons.

Simply Piano is made by JoyTunes and is available on iPhone, iPad, and Android. A free trial lets you explore the first few levels before a subscription is required. More information is available at joytunes.com/simply-piano.
