How to Sign Up for Medicare Part D Prescription Coverage

Enroll in Medicare Part D to cover the cost of prescription drugs and avoid the late enrollment penalty.

    1

    Go to Medicare.gov

    ~15s
Open your browser and go to medicare.gov. Click "Find health & drug plans" at the top of the page.
    2

Enter your ZIP code and current drugs

    ~15s
Type in your ZIP code and list the prescriptions you take. Medicare uses this to show only the plans that cover your drugs at the best price.
    3

    Compare Part D plans side-by-side

    ~15s
Medicare lists plans in your area along with the monthly cost, drug cost, and star rating. Look at the "Estimated Yearly Drug Costs" number — that is the best way to compare.
    4

Click Enroll on the plan you pick

    ~15s
Click the plan name, then click Enroll. Sign in with your Medicare account (or create one with your Medicare number) and enter your info.
    5

Wait for your plan card in the mail

    ~15s
The insurance company will mail you a plan ID card within 2 weeks. Show this card along with your red, white, and blue Medicare card at the pharmacy when picking up prescriptions.

Medicare Part D pays for prescription drugs. Basic Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover most prescriptions, so most people need to add Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.

You should sign up during your 7-month enrollment window around your 65th birthday. Waiting longer means paying a late-enrollment penalty every month for the rest of your life.
