How to Set Up Voicemail on Android

Set up your voicemail greeting on an Android phone and learn how to check your messages.

    1

    Open the Phone app

    ~15s
Tap the Phone icon on your home screen. If you see a "Voicemail" tab at the bottom, you have Visual Voicemail. If not, proceed to the next step.
    2

Press and hold 1 to call voicemail

    ~15s
Open the keypad in the Phone app and press and hold the number 1. This calls your voicemail system. The first time, it walks you through setup.
    3

    Create a voicemail PIN

    ~15s
When prompted, choose a 4 to 6 digit PIN. Enter it twice to confirm. Write it down somewhere safe — you need it to access voicemail remotely.
    4

    Record your greeting

    ~15s
Choose "Personal" or "Custom" greeting. Record after the beep. Press pound (#) or follow prompts to save.

    6

    Consider a Visual Voicemail app

    ~15s

Voicemail on Android lets callers leave a voice message when you do not answer. Setting it up takes a few minutes, and the exact steps depend on your phone carrier (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) and phone brand (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.).

The most common way to set up voicemail is through the Phone app. Open the Phone app (the phone icon on your home screen) and press and hold the number 1 on the keypad. This is the universal voicemail speed dial on most carriers. The first time you call, you will hear automated prompts walking you through setup.

The setup process typically asks you to create a PIN (4 to 6 digits) and record a greeting. For the PIN, choose something you will remember — you need it to check voicemail from another phone. For the greeting, you can use the default (an automated voice says your number) or record a custom greeting.

For a custom greeting, the system prompts you to record after a beep. Say something like: "Hi, you have reached [your name]. I am not available right now. Please leave your name, number, and a brief message, and I will get back to you." Press the pound key (#) or follow the prompts to save your recording.

On newer Android phones, you may have Visual Voicemail. This shows your voicemails as a list in the Phone app, similar to how iPhone does it. To check if your phone supports it, open the Phone app and look for a "Voicemail" tab at the bottom. If it is there, tap it to see your messages in a list. If not, press and hold 1 to call into your voicemail the traditional way.

Some carriers (T-Mobile, Verizon) also offer their own Visual Voicemail apps that you can download from the Play Store. These apps show your messages in a list, often with transcriptions.

To check voicemail the traditional way: press and hold 1 in the Phone app. Enter your PIN when prompted. Listen to your messages and follow the prompts to save, delete, or repeat them.
