Moving to a new home means setting up your technology from scratch. Here is a checklist to make sure everything works when you arrive.
Before moving day: schedule your internet installation. Contact an internet service provider (ISP) for your new address at least 2 weeks before your move. If your current provider serves the new address, you can often transfer your service. Otherwise, research providers at your new address — use broadbandnow.com to see what is available.
If you are keeping your current router, unplug it and pack it carefully. If the ISP is providing a new one, confirm the installation appointment.
Moving day tech checklist: bring your router, modem, streaming devices (Roku, Fire Stick, Apple TV), smart speakers, security cameras, and all cables and power adapters. Label cables before unpacking so you know what goes where.
After arrival: set up internet first — everything else depends on it. Plug in your modem and router. If the ISP is installing, they will handle this. Once you have WiFi, reconnect your devices.
All your smart home devices need to be reconnected to the new WiFi network. Smart speakers, smart bulbs, smart plugs, thermostats, and cameras: open each device's app and update the WiFi connection. For some devices (like smart bulbs), you may need to reset them and set them up from scratch.
Update your WiFi-dependent settings: security camera motion zones (different house layout), smart speaker location settings (for local weather and news), and streaming device location (for local channels).
Update your address on important accounts: bank, credit cards, insurance, voter registration, USPS (set up mail forwarding at usps.com), and any subscriptions that ship to your home.
