How to Set Up a Smart Thermostat

Install and set up a smart thermostat to control your home's temperature from your phone and save on energy bills.

    1

    Check compatibility before buying

    ~17s
Most homes with a standard forced-air heating and cooling system are compatible. Use the compatibility checker on the Nest website (nest.com/compatibility) or ecobee website before purchasing. You will need to look at the wires on your current thermostat — check for a wire labeled "C" or "Common" for the best experience.
    2

Turn off power and remove your old thermostat

    ~15s
Turn off the power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker before starting. Remove your old thermostat from the wall and photograph the wiring configuration before disconnecting anything — you will need to replicate it on the new thermostat.
    3

    Install the new thermostat

    ~15s
Attach the new thermostat's base plate to the wall, connect the wires to the matching terminals (use the photo you took), and snap the thermostat display onto the base. Turn the power back on at the breaker.
    4

Connect to WiFi using the app

    ~15s
Download the Nest app or ecobee app and create a free account. Follow the in-app setup instructions to connect your new thermostat to your home WiFi. The thermostat's screen will also guide you through the process.
    5

    Set your schedule and preferences

    ~15s
Use the app to set your preferred temperatures for morning, daytime, evening, and night. Both Nest and ecobee will learn your schedule over time and suggest adjustments. Enable the "Away" mode so temperatures automatically adjust when everyone leaves home.
