A smart plug goes between a wall outlet and your lamp, fan, or coffee maker. Once set up, you control that device from your phone, set schedules, and use voice commands. Popular brands include TP-Link Kasa, Wyze, Amazon Smart Plug, and Meross, costing $8-15 each.

Plug it in — the indicator light blinks for pairing mode. Download the brand's app, create an account, tap "Add Device," and follow the instructions to connect to WiFi.

Plug a device with a physical ON/OFF switch (lamp, fan, coffee maker) into the smart plug. The device's switch must be in the ON position so the smart plug can control it. Smart plugs do NOT work with electronic-button devices (modern TVs, computers).

Test on/off from the app. Set schedules — turn the lamp on at sunset and off at 11 PM. For voice control, link the smart plug's account in the Alexa or Google Home app. Then say "Alexa, turn on the living room lamp."

Great uses: scheduling lamps for vacation security, starting a coffee maker in the morning, turning off fans at bedtime, and monitoring energy usage (some models track electricity consumption).
