A locked phone is a protected phone. Setting up a PIN, password, or biometric lock (fingerprint or face recognition) means that if your phone is lost or stolen, no one can access your emails, banking apps, photos, or personal information without your permission.
Your phone offers several lock options. PIN: a 4 to 6 digit number. This is the most straightforward option and works well for most people. Choose something you will remember but that is not obvious — avoid 1234, 0000, your birth year, or the last four digits of your phone number.
Password: a longer combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. More secure than a PIN, but slower to type every time you unlock your phone.
Pattern (Android only): draw a pattern connecting dots on a grid. This is fast but can be guessed by someone watching over your shoulder or by looking at smudge marks on your screen.
Biometrics: Face ID (iPhone X and later), Touch ID (older iPhones), or fingerprint sensors (most Android phones). These are the most convenient — you unlock your phone by looking at it or touching the sensor. You still set a PIN or password as a backup.
On iPhone: Go to Settings then Face ID and Passcode (or Touch ID and Passcode on older models). Tap "Turn Passcode On." Choose a 6-digit passcode (recommended) or tap "Passcode Options" for a 4-digit PIN or a custom password. After setting a passcode, the phone asks if you want to set up Face ID or Touch ID — follow the prompts to register your face or fingerprint.
On Android: Go to Settings then Security then Screen Lock (the path varies slightly by brand). Choose your lock type: PIN, Password, or Pattern. Enter your choice and confirm it. Then look for "Fingerprint" or "Face Unlock" in the Security settings to add biometric unlock.
Set your phone to lock automatically after a short idle period: iPhone: Settings then Display and Brightness then Auto-Lock, then choose 30 seconds or 1 minute. Android: Settings then Display then Screen timeout, then 30 seconds or 1 minute.
