How to Set Up Your New iPad

Get your new iPad ready to use in about 20 minutes — from the first power-on screen to signing into your Apple account and adjusting display settings.

    1

    Power on and choose language

    ~15s
Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears. Swipe up on the "Hello" screen and select your language and country.
    2

    Connect to Wi-Fi

    ~15s
Select your home Wi-Fi network from the list and enter the password. The iPad needs an internet connection to finish setup and download your apps.
    3

Sign in with your Apple ID

    ~15s
Enter your Apple ID (the email address linked to your Apple account) and your password. If you do not have one, tap "Forgot password or don't have an Apple ID?" and choose "Create a free Apple ID."
    4

    Set a passcode

    ~15s
Create a 6-digit passcode — this is what you will type to unlock the iPad. Write it down somewhere safe. You can also set up Face ID (facial recognition) or Touch ID (fingerprint) during this step for a faster way to unlock.
    5

    Adjust text size and brightness

    ~15s
After setup, go to Settings (the gray gear icon), tap "Display & Brightness" to increase screen brightness, and tap "Accessibility" then "Display & Text Size" then "Larger Text" to make text easier to read.

When you turn on a new iPad for the first time, Apple walks you through each setup step one screen at a time. The process is straightforward — you will choose your language, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in (or create) an Apple ID, which is the account that lets you download apps and back up your data. The whole setup typically takes 15–25 minutes.

Before you start, have your Wi-Fi network name and password ready, and your Apple ID email and password if you already have one. If you have never had an Apple device, you will create a free Apple ID during setup. An Apple ID is just an email address and password that Apple uses to identify you — you can use any existing email address to create one.

After setup, take a few minutes to increase the text size and screen brightness to a comfortable level — these settings make a big difference for everyday use.
