Group chats on iPhone let you send one message to multiple people at the same time — great for family updates, event planning, or keeping a small circle connected. The Messages app on iPhone makes it straightforward to create one.

There are two types of group messages on iPhone. If everyone in the group has an iPhone (and iMessage is turned on), you get a blue-bubble iMessage group with features like reactions, typing indicators, and the ability to name the group. If anyone in the group has an Android phone, the conversation uses SMS/MMS (green bubbles), which is more limited but still works for basic group texting.

To create a group chat, open the Messages app and tap the compose button (the pencil-and-paper icon in the top-right corner). In the "To:" field, start typing the name or phone number of the first person you want to add. Tap their name when it appears. Then type the next person's name and tap it. Keep adding people until your group is complete.

Once you have added everyone, type your message in the text field at the bottom and tap the blue send arrow. Your group chat is now created, and everyone will see the messages.

If all members are using iMessage, you can name the group by tapping the group icons at the top of the conversation, then tapping "Change Name and Photo." You can also add or remove members from the group here. For SMS/MMS groups, naming and member management are not available.

A few things to keep in mind: group texts can get busy fast. Each member can mute the conversation by tapping the group name and toggling "Hide Alerts." You can also leave an iMessage group (if there are four or more people) by tapping the group name and choosing "Leave this Conversation."

Group chats are saved in your Messages app like any other conversation. You can scroll back through the history, share photos, and use all the same features you would in a one-on-one text.
