Direct deposit sends money from a payer (employer, government, retirement fund) straight into your bank account on payday. No paper check, no bank trip, no waiting for it to clear. Money is available on the payment date, often earlier than a physical check.
You need two numbers from your bank: the routing number (9 digits identifying your bank) and your account number. Find both in your bank's app under "Account Details" or "Direct Deposit," on a check, or on your bank's website.
For your paycheck: ask HR or payroll for a direct deposit form. Fill in routing number, account number, and whether it goes to checking or savings. Many employers let you split deposits between accounts (like 80% checking, 20% savings).
For Social Security: sign in at ssa.gov and update your payment method in account settings. For tax refunds: enter routing and account numbers when filing your return — refunds arrive in about 21 days versus 6-8 weeks by mail.
Double-check every digit before submitting. A wrong number can send money to someone else's account. Most banks display these numbers clearly in their app.
