How to Set Up Your New Android Tablet

Set up your Android tablet step by step — from connecting to Wi-Fi to signing into your Google account so you can download apps and sync your data.

    1

    Power on and choose language

    ~15s
Press the power button — usually on the side or top of the tablet — until the screen lights up. Follow the on-screen prompts to select your language and region.
    2

    Connect to Wi-Fi

    ~15s
Find your home Wi-Fi network in the list and tap it. Enter your Wi-Fi password when asked. If you are unsure of your password, check the sticker on your router or modem.
    3

Sign in with your Google account

    ~15s
Enter your Gmail address and password. If you do not have a Google account, tap "Create account" and choose "For myself" — you will be guided through creating a free account in about three minutes.
    4

    Set a screen lock

    ~15s
Choose a PIN (a 4–6 digit number) to lock your tablet when you are not using it. This protects your data if the tablet is lost. You can also add a fingerprint on most models under Settings > Biometrics.
    5

    Adjust font size

    ~15s
Go to Settings, then "Display," then "Font size and style." Drag the slider toward "Large" or "Largest" so text across the tablet is comfortable to read without straining.

Android tablets are made by several different companies — Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon (Fire tablets), and others — but the setup process is similar across all of them. When you turn one on for the first time, it asks you to choose a language, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in with a Google account. Your Google account is what lets you download apps from the Google Play Store and back up your contacts and photos.

Have your Wi-Fi network name and password ready before you start, along with your Gmail address and password. If you do not have a Gmail account, you can create one for free during setup. Amazon Fire tablets work a little differently — they use an Amazon account instead of Google — but the steps are still very similar.

Plan for 15–20 minutes to complete the full setup. After you finish, check the font size settings right away — larger text makes the tablet much more comfortable to read.
