Samsung Galaxy Camera Tips: Pro Mode, Scene Optimizer, and More

Get better photos from your Samsung Galaxy phone by using Pro mode, the Scene Optimizer, and the rear selfie camera shortcut.

    1

    Turn On the Scene Optimizer

    ~31s
Open the Samsung Camera app. Tap the Settings gear icon in the top-left corner. Scroll down and look for Scene Optimizer. Make sure the toggle is turned on (it appears blue or green when active). With this on, the camera will automatically show you which scene it has detected — like "Food" or "Sunset" — with a small label at the top of the viewfinder.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If the Scene Optimizer is classifying a scene incorrectly, you can tap the scene label that appears on screen to turn off the automatic optimization for that shot.

    2

Use the Histogram and Exposure in Pro Mode

    ~23s
In the Camera app, swipe left on the mode options at the bottom until you see Pro (some phones show it as "Expert RAW" for high-end models). Tap Pro to enter manual mode. Look for the sun or exposure icon — tap it and slide the bar left to darken the photo or right to brighten it. This alone fixes many overexposed or dark photos.
    3

Switch to Rear Camera for Selfies

    ~30s
When you are in selfie mode (front camera), look for a small icon that looks like a person or a camera flip symbol. On many Samsung phones, you can also double-press the Volume Down button to quickly switch from the front to the rear camera. This lets you take a higher-resolution photo using the main camera even when you are holding the phone like a selfie camera.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If double-pressing the volume button does not work, check Settings > Advanced Features > Side Key or Quick Launch Camera for customization options.

    4

    Use Director's View for Video

    ~19s
Samsung's Director's View mode (available on Galaxy S21 and newer) lets you see a preview from all camera lenses at the same time while recording video. You can switch between lenses mid-recording by tapping the preview thumbnail. Open the Camera app, swipe the mode options to find Director's View, and tap it to try it out.
    5

Use the Grid Lines for Straighter Photos

    ~19s
In Camera Settings, look for Grid Lines and turn it on. This places a tic-tac-toe grid over the viewfinder. Aligning your horizon with one of the horizontal lines helps you keep photos straight. Placing your subject at one of the four intersection points (rather than dead center) often produces more visually interesting compositions.

Samsung Galaxy phones have some of the most capable cameras in the smartphone market, but many owners only ever use the basic automatic mode. Learning a few extra camera features can make a noticeable difference in the quality of your photos.

The Scene Optimizer is one of the most useful features for everyday photography. When turned on, it automatically detects what you are photographing — food, a sunset, a pet, a document, a person — and adjusts the camera settings to get the best result for that subject. It works behind the scenes without any effort on your part.

Pro mode gives you manual control over settings like brightness, focus, and white balance. It sounds technical, but even using it in a small way — like adjusting the exposure so a bright sky does not look washed out — can quickly improve your photos.

Most Samsung phones also have a quick way to switch from the front selfie camera to the rear camera while keeping the same framing. This is useful when you want a higher-quality shot with the main camera but are holding the phone in selfie position.

These tips apply to most Samsung Galaxy phones released in the last few years, including the Galaxy S, A, and Note series. The exact layout of the camera app may look slightly different depending on your model and software version, but the features should all be in similar locations.
