How to Access and Check Your Retirement Account Online

Your 401(k), IRA, or pension account can be checked online anytime — here's how to find your account and understand what you're looking at.

    1

Find where your retirement account is held

    ~19s
Your account is held by a financial firm — common ones include Fidelity (fidelity.com), Vanguard (vanguard.com), Charles Schwab (schwab.com), TIAA (tiaa.org), and Empower (formerly Great-West). Check your most recent paper statement — the company name and website are printed on it. If you're not sure, ask your employer's HR department which company manages your 401(k).
    2

    Create an online account

    ~28s
Go to the financial firm's website. Click "Register," "Create Account," or "Open Online Access." You'll be asked for your Social Security number, account number (from your statement), date of birth, and email address to verify your identity. Create a username and password. Many firms also offer or require two-step verification — highly recommended for financial accounts.

    Quick Tip

If you run into trouble registering online, call the firm's customer service number (printed on your statement). They can help you set up online access over the phone in about 10-15 minutes.

    3

    Understand your account dashboard

    ~18s
After logging in, you'll see a dashboard with your account balance (current value of all your investments), recent activity (contributions, withdrawals, investment changes), and your investment holdings (a list of the funds you're invested in with their current values). The "Performance" or "Returns" section shows how much your account has grown over time.
    4

Set up alerts and paperless statements

    ~31s
Look for "Alerts" or "Notifications" in your account settings. Set up an email alert for: large account balance changes (unusual activity), successful or failed login attempts, and statement availability. Switching to paperless statements means you'll receive statements by email — log in to view them any time. This is also more secure than paper statements that could be taken from a mailbox.

    Quick Tip

Never share your retirement account login credentials with anyone over the phone or email, even if they claim to be from the financial firm. Real financial firms will never ask for your password.
