A frozen phone — where the screen does not respond to taps and nothing seems to work — is frustrating but usually not serious. Most of the time, a force restart fixes the problem. A force restart is different from a normal restart: it forces the phone to power off and back on even when the screen is unresponsive.

A force restart does not delete your data, apps, or settings. Think of it like unplugging a computer and plugging it back in — it clears whatever was causing the freeze and starts fresh.

iPhone (Face ID models — iPhone X and later): Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear. This takes about 10 seconds. Let go of the Side button and wait for the phone to restart.

iPhone 7: Press and hold both the Volume Down button and the Side button at the same time. Keep holding until you see the Apple logo (about 10 seconds).

iPhone 6s and earlier: Press and hold both the Home button and the Top (or Side) button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

Android phones: Press and hold the Power button for 10 to 20 seconds. On most Android phones, this forces a restart. If that does not work, try holding the Power button and Volume Down button at the same time for 10 to 20 seconds. Samsung phones: hold Power + Volume Down for about 7 seconds.

After the restart, your phone should work normally. If your phone keeps freezing, it may be running low on storage, have an app that is misbehaving, or need a software update. Try updating your phone, closing apps running in the background, or freeing up storage space.

If force restart does not work and your phone is completely unresponsive, let the battery drain completely. Once it dies, plug it in and turn it back on normally.
