Rakuten (formerly Ebates) is a free service that pays you a percentage of your purchase back as cash whenever you shop at a participating online store. Over 3,500 retailers participate, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Macy's, Home Depot, Best Buy, Gap, and hundreds more. Cash back rates range from 1% to 15% or more depending on the store and current promotions.
Unlike store loyalty programs that give you store credit or points, Rakuten pays you with actual cash — deposited to your PayPal account quarterly (in February, May, August, and November), or sent as a check. There are no points to figure out, no credit card required, and no minimum spend.
You can use Rakuten in two ways: the browser extension (most convenient) or the Rakuten website. The browser extension is a small add-on for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. When you visit a participating store, a small pop-up appears asking if you want to activate cash back. Click once and your purchase earns cash back automatically — no extra steps during checkout.
The website approach: go to rakuten.com first, search for the store, click through Rakuten's link to the store, then shop normally. The order in which you do this matters — you must start from Rakuten before shopping, not navigate directly to the store.
New members often receive a sign-up bonus ($10-30) after their first qualifying purchase, making it worth signing up even if you're not sure you'll use it regularly.
Rakuten has been operating since 1999 and has paid over $3.5 billion in cash back to its members.
