    1

    Get your library card ready

    ~30s
You will need a library card number and PIN to use Libby. If you already have a physical library card, the card number is printed on the front or back. If you do not have a card, visit your library's website — many libraries issue free digital cards instantly online. Your library's website will also have instructions for setting up or resetting your PIN.

    Quick Tip

If you are not sure what your PIN is, the default is often the last four digits of your phone number, or you can reset it on your library's website.

    2

    Download the Libby app

    ~15s
Open the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) and search for "Libby, by OverDrive." Download and install the free app. Open it and tap "Yes" when asked if you have a library card.
    3

Find your library and sign in

    ~18s
Libby will ask for your location or let you search by library name. Type your city name or library name (for example, "Denver Public Library"). Select your library from the list, then enter your library card number and PIN. Tap "Sign In." Your library's digital collection is now available in the app.
    4

Search for a book and borrow it

    ~32s
Tap "Search" and type the title or author of a book you want. Tap the book cover to open its page. If it is available, tap "Borrow" to check it out immediately. The book will download to the app and you can start reading or listening right away. If there is a wait, tap "Place a Hold" and you will be notified when it becomes available.

    Quick Tip

Tap the headphone icon to filter for audiobooks only, or tap the book icon to filter for e-books. This helps when you are in the mood for one format over the other.

    5

    Read or listen, then return

    ~22s
Tap the book in your "Loans" section to start reading or listening. Libby remembers exactly where you stopped, even if you switch between your phone and tablet. When you are done, or if you want to free up a borrowing slot early, tap the book title and select "Return early." Returns are instant and completely automatic — no action needed when the loan period ends.

Your local library card gives you access to thousands of free e-books and audiobooks that you can borrow and read or listen to on your phone, tablet, or computer — no trips to the library required. The app that makes this possible is called Libby, and it was created by a company called OverDrive.

Libby connects to your local library's digital collection. When you borrow a book through Libby, it appears on your device immediately and disappears automatically when the lending period ends (usually 14 to 21 days). There are no late fees, ever.

Because digital books are limited in how many people can borrow them at once, popular new releases sometimes have waiting lists. If a book is not available right now, you can tap "Place a Hold" and Libby will notify you when it is your turn. For books that are always available without a wait, look for books marked as "Always Available" — these are typically older titles and public domain classics.

Libby works on iPhone, Android, iPad, and Kindle Fire tablets. You can also read on a computer at libbyapp.com. You can have multiple library cards from different library systems in Libby at the same time — which is useful if you have cards from more than one county or city.

All you need to get started is a library card. If you do not have one, most libraries now let you get a digital card online by entering your name and address — no in-person visit required.

Audiobooks in Libby are especially popular for people who want to "read" during walks, drives, or household chores. The app remembers your place and lets you adjust the narration speed to your preference.
