    1

Download the Google Home app and sign in

    ~19s
Open the App Store or Google Play Store and search for "Google Home." Download the free app from Google LLC. Open it and sign in with your Google account (the same account you use for Gmail). If you do not have a Google account, you can create one for free at google.com.
    2

Add the Nest Cam to the app

    ~31s
In the Google Home app, tap the plus (+) button, then tap Set Up Device, then New Device. Choose your home (or create one if this is your first Google device). The app will prompt you to scan a QR code on the camera itself or on the packaging — hold your phone's camera over the QR code and the app will recognize it automatically.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: The QR code is usually on the bottom of the camera or on a sticker attached to the power cable. Have the camera in hand before starting setup.

    3

    Connect the camera to Wi-Fi

    ~27s
The app will ask which Wi-Fi network to connect the camera to. Select your home Wi-Fi network and enter the password. The camera will take about a minute to connect. You will hear a chime or see a status LED change color when connection is successful.

    Warning

Place the camera close to your Wi-Fi router during initial setup to ensure a strong signal. After setup is complete, you can move it to its permanent location. If the signal is too weak, the camera may disconnect frequently.

    4

Name the camera and choose its location

    ~18s
Give the camera a name that describes where it is placed — "Front Door," "Backyard," "Nursery." Choose which room it belongs to in your Google Home so it is straightforward to find in the app. The setup wizard will walk you through these steps and then confirm the camera is ready.
    5

View live footage and review alerts

    ~26s
Open Google Home and tap your camera to see a live view. You can watch the feed in real time. When the camera detects a person, animal, vehicle, or package, it will send a notification to your phone. Tap the notification to see the video clip. Go to the camera settings to adjust which types of activity trigger alerts and whether to enable familiar face alerts (which can notify you when a specific person it has learned is detected).

Google Nest Cam is a security camera that connects to your home Wi-Fi and lets you watch live video, receive motion alerts, and review recorded clips from the Google Home app on your phone. It is part of Google's Nest family of smart home products.

Google offers several Nest Cam models:

Nest Cam (indoor, wired): Plugs into a wall outlet. Good for monitoring indoor spaces like a living room, nursery, or entryway.

Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery): Wire-free and can be used indoors or outdoors. Runs on a rechargeable battery.

Nest Cam with floodlight: Outdoor camera with a built-in motion-activated floodlight, wired into your outdoor electrical.

All Nest Cams are managed through the Google Home app, which also controls other Google Nest products like the Nest Thermostat and Google Nest speakers. If you already use the Google Home app, adding a Nest Cam fits in naturally.

The free Google account includes 3 hours of event video history — you can see short clips from the past 3 hours. A Nest Aware subscription ($6/month or $60/year) extends this to 30 days of event history or 10 days of continuous 24/7 recording.

Nest Cams use artificial intelligence to detect people, animals, vehicles, and package deliveries specifically — rather than just generic motion. This reduces false alerts. For example, it can tell you "A person was detected at your front door" rather than just "Motion detected."

Night vision is included on all models and works automatically when the lighting is low.
