My HealtheVet is the online patient portal for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. If you are a veteran enrolled in VA healthcare, this free portal allows you to manage much of your VA care from home — without needing to call the VA or visit in person for routine tasks.
The portal is available at myhealth.va.gov. You can access it from any web browser on a computer, or through the My HealtheVet app on iPhone or Android.
To get started, you need a verified account. The VA accepts sign-in through three credential providers: Login.gov, ID.me, and My HealtheVet's own username/password system. Login.gov and ID.me both require identity verification (uploading a photo ID and taking a selfie). This one-time process protects your medical information and unlocks the full portal features. If you need help setting up an account, VA staff at your local facility can assist you.
Once logged in, the main features include:
Prescription Refills: You can request refills for most VA prescriptions online. Go to "Pharmacy," then "Refill Prescriptions," check the boxes next to medications you need, and submit. Refills are typically mailed to your home. You can track shipment status in the same section.
Secure Messaging: Use this to send non-urgent messages to your VA care team — ask questions, request referrals, or follow up after an appointment. Expect a response within two to three business days. Secure messaging is not for emergencies.
Appointments: View your upcoming VA appointments, including date, time, location, and the provider's name. You can also request certain types of appointments through the portal, though not all appointment types are available online at every VA facility.
Health Records: View your lab results, medical notes, and vaccination records. The "Blue Button" feature lets you download or print a comprehensive summary of your VA health record to share with non-VA providers.
Medical Images: Request CDs or download some imaging results (X-rays, MRIs) through the portal.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, do not use the secure messaging tool. Call the Veterans Crisis Line at 988 (then press 1), text 838255, or chat at veteranscrisisline.net. For medical emergencies, call 911.
