How to Add Your Driver's License to Your Phone's Wallet

Several US states now allow you to store a digital version of your driver's license or state ID on your iPhone or Android phone and use it at airports and government buildings.

    1

Check if your state offers a digital ID

    ~15s
Search "[Your State] mobile driver's license" or visit your state DMV website. Look for "Digital ID," "mDL," or "Mobile Driver's License" in their services list.
    2

On iPhone: open the Wallet app

    ~15s
Open the Wallet app (it looks like a folded leather wallet). Tap the + button in the top right corner → tap "Driver's License or State ID."
    3

Select your state and follow verification steps

    ~19s
Choose your state from the list. You will be asked to scan the front and back of your physical driver's license and take a selfie. The app verifies the ID against your state's DMV records.

    Quick Tip

Have your physical driver's license handy during setup. Good lighting helps the ID scan go smoothly on the first try.

    4

On Android: add your ID to Google Wallet

    ~15s
Open Google Wallet → tap the "+" button → select "ID" → select "Driver's License" → follow your state's specific enrollment steps. Some states use a separate state app rather than Google Wallet directly.
    5

Present your digital ID at TSA or approved locations

    ~21s
At an airport TSA checkpoint with a digital ID reader (look for signs), tap your iPhone or Android to the reader when prompted. Confirm with Face ID or your fingerprint to authorize the transaction.

    Warning

Do not stop carrying your physical driver's license. Digital IDs are not accepted everywhere yet and are not valid for driving purposes in most states.

A digital ID (also called a mobile driver's license or mDL) is a secure digital version of your state-issued driver's license or identification card stored on your phone. Multiple US states now issue digital IDs, and the list is growing.

As of 2026, states with active mobile ID programs include Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah, among others. The program is expanding — check your state's DMV website to see if it is available where you live.

You can use a digital ID at select TSA checkpoints at airports (not all airports accept them yet) and some government buildings. The TSA reader works with both iPhone (using Apple Wallet) and Android (using Google Wallet).

    Adding to iPhone (Apple Wallet)

: Go to the Wallet app → tap the + button → select "Driver's License or State ID" → select your state → follow the verification steps, which include scanning your physical ID and taking a selfie.

    Adding to Android (Google Wallet)

: Open Google Wallet → tap "+" → select "ID" → follow your state's verification process.

Digital IDs use encryption and biometric verification. When you present your digital ID to a reader, only the information required for that transaction is shared — a TSA check, for example, does not get your home address, just your age confirmation and identity. This is more private than handing over a physical license.

Note: A digital ID is a complement to your physical ID, not a replacement. Always carry your physical license when driving — digital IDs are not yet accepted for traffic stops in most states.
