A digital ID (also called a mobile driver's license or mDL) is a secure digital version of your state-issued driver's license or identification card stored on your phone. Multiple US states now issue digital IDs, and the list is growing.
As of 2026, states with active mobile ID programs include Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah, among others. The program is expanding — check your state's DMV website to see if it is available where you live.
You can use a digital ID at select TSA checkpoints at airports (not all airports accept them yet) and some government buildings. The TSA reader works with both iPhone (using Apple Wallet) and Android (using Google Wallet).
Adding to iPhone (Apple Wallet)
: Go to the Wallet app → tap the + button → select "Driver's License or State ID" → select your state → follow the verification steps, which include scanning your physical ID and taking a selfie.
Adding to Android (Google Wallet)
: Open Google Wallet → tap "+" → select "ID" → follow your state's verification process.
Digital IDs use encryption and biometric verification. When you present your digital ID to a reader, only the information required for that transaction is shared — a TSA check, for example, does not get your home address, just your age confirmation and identity. This is more private than handing over a physical license.
Note: A digital ID is a complement to your physical ID, not a replacement. Always carry your physical license when driving — digital IDs are not yet accepted for traffic stops in most states.
