How to Sell Unused Items on Mercari

Sell electronics, toys, books, and household items from your home using Mercari — with free shipping options and a straightforward listing process.

    1

    Set up your Mercari account

    ~15s
Download the Mercari app from the App Store or Google Play. Tap "Sign Up" and create an account using your email or phone number. Verify your phone number to unlock the ability to sell and access higher payment limits.
    2

Take photos and create a listing

    ~25s
Tap the camera icon at the bottom of the screen to start a listing. Take up to 12 photos of your item from different angles. Add a clear title (brand + item name works well), a description of the condition, and any details that matter to buyers like model numbers or included accessories.

    Quick Tip

Mercari's AI will suggest a category, price, and description automatically based on your photos. You can accept these suggestions or customize them.

    3

    Set your price and shipping

    ~21s
Enter the price you want. You can offer free shipping (Mercari adds the shipping cost to the item price) or charge buyers for shipping. For most items under 5 lbs, selecting "Mercari prepaid label" is the easiest option — the label is emailed to you when the item sells.

    Quick Tip

Tap "Price Suggestions" to see what similar sold items went for on Mercari.

    4

Pack and ship the sold item

    ~25s
When your item sells, you'll receive a notification and a prepaid shipping label. Pack the item securely in a box or padded mailer. Tape the label to the outside and drop the package at any USPS location. Ship within 3 business days to keep your seller rating high.

    Warning

If the item is fragile, add extra padding. If a buyer receives a broken item and you didn't pack it properly, the dispute may go against you.

    5

    Confirm and get paid

    ~15s
Mercari holds the payment until the buyer receives the item and confirms it. Buyers have 3 days to rate the sale; if they don't, Mercari automatically releases the funds. Transfer your balance to your bank account from the "Balance" section in the app.

Mercari is an online marketplace app where you can sell almost anything — electronics, kitchen gadgets, toys, books, clothing, collectibles, and more. It's one of the easiest platforms for everyday people to list and sell used items without needing to be a professional seller.

Unlike eBay, Mercari doesn't require an auction. You set a fixed price, and when someone buys, you ship it. The app is available on iPhone, Android, and the web at mercari.com.

Mercari charges sellers a 10% fee plus a small payment processing fee on each completed sale — there are no listing fees, so it costs nothing to post an item. You can list something in about 2 minutes using your phone's camera.

The platform handles payment processing and provides prepaid shipping labels for most items. Once a sale is confirmed by the buyer, your earnings are deposited to your Mercari balance, which you can transfer to your bank account or use to purchase other items.

Mercari is particularly popular for selling electronics, gaming items, trading cards, household goods, and niche collectibles. Buyers are protected — if an item doesn't arrive or doesn't match the listing, they can request a refund.
