The official Medicare mobile app gives you quick access to your Medicare benefits, claims history, deductibles, and covered services — right from your phone. Instead of calling 1-800-MEDICARE or waiting for a paper explanation of benefits in the mail, you can check the status of a claim or verify coverage within seconds.
The app is called "What's Covered" from Medicare.gov, and it works alongside the MyMedicare.gov website. There is also a Medicare and You Handbook available digitally. Together, these tools replace most reasons to call the Medicare helpline.
Here is what you can do with the Medicare app: look up whether a specific service, test, or item is covered by Original Medicare (Part A and B); check your eligibility dates; view your Medicare Summary Notices (the official record of what was billed and paid); find Medicare-participating doctors, hospitals, and suppliers near you; compare nursing homes and home health agencies on quality ratings; and get information about Medicare Advantage, supplemental plans, and Part D prescription coverage.
The "What's Covered" app is particularly useful for checking coverage before a procedure. You can type in a specific treatment or supply (like a CPAP machine or blood glucose monitor) and the app tells you the official Medicare coverage rules — what percentage Medicare pays, whether you need a referral, and what your out-of-pocket costs might be.
The app requires creating a Medicare.gov account if you do not have one. Your Medicare number (on your red, white, and blue card) is needed during registration.
