How to Set Up a Medical ID on Android

A Medical ID stores your critical health information on your phone's lock screen — so emergency responders can access it even if your phone is locked.

    1

Find Emergency Information Settings (All Android)

    ~17s
Go to your phone's Settings. Search for "Emergency" or "Medical ID." The most common paths: SettingsSafety & emergency → Medical information (Pixel phones), SettingsAbout phoneEmergency information (some Samsung), or Samsung Health appProfileMedical information. Tap whatever result appears.
    2

Set Up on Samsung Galaxy (Detailed Steps)

    ~18s
Open the Samsung Health app. Tap your profile photo or name at the top. Tap "Medical information." Fill in blood type, medications, allergies, medical conditions. To make it visible from the lock screen: go to SettingsLock screenContact information → toggle on "Show emergency information from Health."
    3

Set Up on Google Pixel (Detailed Steps)

    ~18s
Go to SettingsSafety & emergency → Medical information. Tap each field to enter your blood type, allergies, medications, and medical notes. Tap "Emergency contacts" to add contacts. Your emergency info then appears on the lock screen when someone taps "Emergency" at the bottom of the lock screen.
    4

    Add Emergency Contacts

    ~23s
In the same Emergency information section, tap "Emergency contacts" or "Add contact." Select from your Contacts app. Add at least two people who know your medical history — a spouse, adult child, or close family member. Their phone number appears on your lock screen under "Emergency" without needing to unlock the phone.

    Quick Tip

Tell your emergency contacts that they're listed on your phone so they know to expect a call if something happens.

    5

Verify It's Accessible From Lock Screen

    ~16s
Lock your phone. On the lock screen, look for an "Emergency" button (usually at the bottom left or bottom center). Tap it. You should see an "Emergency information" or "View medical info" option. Tap it to confirm your information appears. This is what paramedics will see.

A Medical ID is critical health information stored on your phone that emergency responders can access without unlocking it. If you're unconscious, injured, or unable to speak, first responders look for a Medical ID to learn about your medical conditions, allergies, medications, blood type, and emergency contacts.

On iPhone, this feature is built into the Health app and well-known. On Android, it's handled differently by each brand, but every major Android phone has a way to store emergency medical information accessible from the lock screen.

For Samsung Galaxy phones, Medical Information is in the Samsung Health app and can also be set up in Settings. For Google Pixel phones, it's in the Emergency Information section of Settings. For other Android phones, look in Settings under "Safety & emergency" or "Emergency information."

All Android phones running Android 4.0 or newer have the ability to store emergency contact information visible from the lock screen. The exact path to find it varies, but it's always there.

The information you should include: blood type, any serious medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy, etc.), major allergies (especially drug allergies — this is critical for emergency treatment), current medications (especially blood thinners, insulin, or medications with emergency significance), and at least two emergency contacts with their relationship to you.

Setting this up takes less than five minutes and could make a life-saving difference. Emergency rooms routinely check for Medical ID information when treating patients who cannot communicate.
