How to Review and Manage Your Google Account Privacy Settings

Your Google account tracks a lot. Here's how to review what Google has collected, turn off data tracking you don't want, and secure your account.

    1

    Open your Google Account settings

    ~15s
Go to myaccount.google.com in any browser, or open the Google app on your phone, tap your profile picture, and tap "Manage your Google Account." This is the control center for all your Google privacy and security settings.
    2

Review what Google has recorded (My Activity)

    ~27s
Tap the "Data & Privacy" tab. Tap "My Activity." You'll see everything Google has recorded: searches, YouTube videos watched, maps routes, and more. To delete something: click the three dots next to an item and select "Delete." Or use "Delete activity by" to wipe activity from a date range or all time.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Tap "Manage my activity controls" to turn off future tracking for specific activity types. You can turn off Web & App Activity, Location History, and YouTube History independently.

    3

    Turn off location history

    ~15s
In Data & Privacy, tap "Location History." If it's on, you'll see a timeline of everywhere Google has tracked you going. Tap "Turn off" if you don't want Google recording your movements. You can also delete all past location history from the same screen.
    4

    Review ad personalization

    ~16s
Still in Data & Privacy, scroll to "Ad settings." Tap "Ad personalization." Here you can see the interests and categories Google has assigned you for targeting ads. You can turn off personalized ads entirely (you'll still see ads, just not targeted ones) or remove specific interest categories.
    5

    Check account security

    ~22s
Tap the "Security" tab. Review: what devices are signed into your Google account (remove any you don't recognize), whether 2-Step Verification is enabled (turn it on if not — it's your best defense against account theft), and what third-party apps have access to your Google data.

    Warning

If you see devices signed in that you don't recognize, click "See unfamiliar activity" immediately and follow the steps to secure your account.

Your Google account (the one tied to your Gmail) is used across most of what you do online — searching, watching YouTube, using Google Maps, using Android. By default, Google records a lot: your search history, location history, YouTube watch history, and more. This data is used to personalize ads and suggestions.

The good news: Google gives you control over all of this. You can review what's been recorded, delete specific items or your entire history, turn off future tracking, and lock down account security. This doesn't require anything technical — Google's privacy settings are designed to be accessible.

This guide walks through the key settings worth reviewing. Even making one or two changes can significantly reduce data collection.
