    1

    Pack and seal your box

    ~25s
Place your item in an appropriate box with padding around it. Seal all seams with packing tape. Write nothing on the outside yet — you'll add labels last. Free Priority Mail boxes are available at any post office or you can order them at usps.com/ship — they're delivered to your door at no charge.

    Quick Tip

Don't reuse a box with old labels, writing, or barcodes on the outside without completely covering them. Multiple barcodes can confuse automated sorters.

    2

Write or print the shipping label

    ~18s
You need the recipient's full name, street address, city, state, and ZIP code. Write legibly in the center of the largest face of the box, or go to usps.com/ship to pay online and print a label at home. Printing at home usually costs slightly less than paying at the counter.
    3

Weigh the package (if using Click-N-Ship online)

    ~26s
If you're paying online at usps.com/ship (the "Click-N-Ship" feature), you'll need the weight and approximate dimensions of the box. A kitchen scale works fine. If you're not sure of the weight, you can pay at the post office — they weigh it for you.

    Quick Tip

Click-N-Ship saves you time at the post office. After printing the label, just drop the package in any USPS blue mailbox (if it fits) or at a post office lobby drop slot.

    4

Drop it off or schedule a free pickup

    ~17s
You can drop your package at any post office, hand it to your mail carrier, leave it in your mailbox (if it fits), or schedule a free package pickup at usps.com/pickup. The carrier will pick it up the next day during your regular mail delivery.
    5

    Track your shipment

    ~15s
Whether you paid at the counter or online, USPS gives you a tracking number. Visit usps.com and enter the number in the "Track & Manage" box to see where your package is. You can also call 1-800-222-1811 for tracking updates.

The US Postal Service (USPS) is one of the most affordable ways to ship packages anywhere in the country. You can drop off a package at your local post office, schedule a free pickup from your front door, or print a pre-paid label online at home and drop it off at any USPS location.

There are several shipping options to choose from: - **Priority Mail** is the most popular option. It typically delivers in 1–3 business days and includes free boxes you can pick up at the post office or order online at usps.com. - **First-Class Package Service** is cheaper for small, lightweight items under 16 ounces. - **Priority Mail Express** is the fastest option with overnight or two-day delivery, but it's the most expensive. - **Ground Advantage** is a slower, less expensive option for heavier packages that aren't time-sensitive.

Before shipping, you'll need a box or padded envelope, packing material (bubble wrap or crumpled newspaper) to protect the contents, and the recipient's complete address including zip code. You can print a label at home if you have a printer, or pay at the post office counter.

If you shop at websites like Amazon or eBay frequently, you'll find the process very familiar — it's the same basic idea, just in reverse. USPS is especially well-known for reliable rural delivery and competitive pricing on small packages.
