What Is MagSafe? How to Use Apple MagSafe Charging and Accessories

MagSafe is Apple's magnetic charging system for iPhone 12 and later. It snaps into place automatically and charges faster than standard wireless charging.

    1

Check if your iPhone supports MagSafe

    ~31s
MagSafe is available on iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, and all models from iPhone 13 onward (13, 14, 15, 16 series). If you have one of these models, your iPhone already has the MagSafe magnet ring built in. No setup needed — just bring a MagSafe accessory near the back of the phone and it snaps into place.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Standard Qi wireless chargers still work with MagSafe iPhones, but they charge at the slower 7.5W rate instead of MagSafe's 15W. If fast wireless charging matters to you, use a MagSafe charger.

    2

    Use the MagSafe charger

    ~27s
The official Apple MagSafe charger is a disc-shaped charging puck that attaches magnetically to the back of your iPhone. Plug it into power using a USB-C cable and a USB-C power adapter (sold separately — or use any USB-C power brick you have). Hold the charging disc near the back of your phone — it snaps into place with a satisfying click. A charging animation appears on screen. You can pick up the phone and the charger comes along, then detach it when you want.

    Explore MagSafe accessories

    ~33s
Many accessories snap onto iPhones via MagSafe: a wallet card holder (attaches to the back of the phone, holds 2-3 cards), a car mount (snap-on magnetic mount for your car vent or dashboard — much easier than sliding a phone into a bracket), a stand/kickstand (props your phone at an angle for video watching), and combination charging pads that charge iPhone + AirPods + Apple Watch simultaneously (called MagSafe Duo or 3-in-1 chargers).

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Third-party MagSafe-compatible accessories are widely available and often much cheaper than Apple's versions. Look for "MagSafe compatible" in the product listing — most work identically to Apple's official accessories.

    4

    Use MagSafe with a case

    ~22s
Most modern iPhone cases are MagSafe compatible — they have a clear window or built-in alignment ring that allows MagSafe accessories to snap through the case without removing the phone. Look for "MagSafe compatible" in case descriptions. Cases without the MagSafe alignment ring still work, but the magnetic snap is weaker. Very thick cases may reduce charging speed slightly, but most standard cases have no noticeable effect.

MagSafe is Apple's wireless charging and accessory attachment system, built into the iPhone 12 and all later models. The back of these iPhones contains a ring of magnets that snaps any MagSafe accessory into precise alignment automatically — you don't need to carefully center the phone on a charging pad. The magnets do that for you.

MagSafe charges iPhones faster than standard Qi wireless charging (up to 15W versus 7.5W) and works with a growing ecosystem of magnetic accessories: chargers, wallets, cases, car mounts, and stands. MagSafe accessories are labeled with the MagSafe logo and snap magnetically to the back of the phone.

You do not need to use MagSafe — regular cables and standard Qi wireless chargers still work. But MagSafe is convenient, and if you are already buying iPhone accessories, MagSafe versions offer the best fit.
